Havent updated anything lately due to my PC crashed a couple of weeks ago and I had to wait for a new PC and get it all loaded up with software and programs etc.

So, here's just an outline of whats been happening at our place.

PRINCESS PARROTS.....I am still handraising some babies...there were five, but we lost piglet when she flew off mid feed and crashed into a window. Piglet survived that and seemed fine, but died two hours later.

We lost a second chick, the one who aspirated earlier on when Ken fed it wrongly. It seemed to get an infection overnight and died in that time.

So we have three Princess chicks doing well now and almost weaned. They go for a fly around the aviary twice a day.

Barraband parrots...we have three babies ( adopted ones ) in a nest all doing well. Eldest nearly in pin feathers. I will try for photos, but the mother gets nasty about interference.

Canaries. The mother ( RINGO ) and father ( JAFFA ) who have had two nests already this season and produced 5 chicks successfully, found a way to create another nest in a crevice behind a parrot nesting box. I saw it just days ago and reached in when Mum was off feeding to feel for eggs. But I felt soft babies, so there are new babies hatched in there. I cannot tell how many as yet...I will need a mirror on a stick as I cannot see into the crevice really well.

Budgies I have lots of new babies. Some newly fledged and some in the nest and new ones hatching out. One chick was attacked by its mother as a newly hatched and its wingtip was bitten off slightly. This chick has been moved to foster parents and is doing well. It is a dominant pied chick from my boy WINSTON. Winston's hen has had another chick but is feeding it and caring for it very well this time.

Eggs that were donated to me by a show breeder have hatched. Some of those chicks are looking good. One chick lost all its flights but has a ton of down still on it ( a grey spangle ) while its brothers and sisters seem fine. Brothers and sisters are...a hen DF white, a cock DF white and a Hen lutino. Others from donated eggs are cinnamon grey greens, possibly hens.

I will try and take photos today. Miserable day today...drizzling rain.

Still waiting for my new birdroom, but my husband is busy and he wants to be the one to prep the area for the new slab....so thats why the delay.

Will update more pictures later. We have just had a tragedy :sad: My favourite cat BARNSIE our seal point siamese rescue cat has just been killed on the road outside our house. We are very upset.

Its been a bad day. We feel GUTTED by the loss of Barnsie...he was a very special cat. He will leave a gaping great hole in our lives and we will miss him intensely.

One tiny baby hatchling was attacked by its mother as a newly hatched. She bit off the tip of its right wing. I fostered it out and here it is now ( see the right wing tip is shorter )

 

 

My dark green split lacewing cock and his yellow lacewing hen have another 10 eggs

Sorry to hear about the loss of your cat Barnsie Kaz, he looked beautiful. Thanks for your update, some of those chicks look like they have plenty of feather. Sad about that chick loosing part of it’s wing it will never be able to fly well.

l understand how you feel, l also love siamese cats, l had a tonkinese cat (part siamese, part burmese) who lived to be 17 years old, l use to call her momma because she was my constant companion. she would wait at my bedroom door and would meow for me nonstop until l came to her and open my door to go to bed. she would sleep with me under my covers, put her paws on my leg. l miss her so much, there isn't a day that goes bye that l don't think of her.

Barnsie also used to sleep under the covers in the crook of my arm by my shoulder, purring as loud as a freight train. I missed him last night. The other two cats sense something is wrong. Our other siamese cat ORLANDO used to sleep curled up with Barnsie on the couch each day

 

 

Ken is having today off work. He had nightmares about Barnsie through the night and didnt get enough sleep.

I checked the hidden canary nest in the aviary while the mum RINGO was out feeding. I thought there was one chick, but there is three quite large chicks in there. They must have hatched earlier than I thought :sad:

 

 

 

Ken also discovered a canary nest hidden in a hanging planter that wasnt being used and was sitting on the ground. That pair have a nest in the planter with one chick in it.

 

Here is the barraband chicks....only two now. The youngest died.

By the looks of the chicks, you are in for a very good year. I'm just glad your over there or I'd have a hard year competing against those chicks. .... But there is the Nationals

For the nationals, yes but id be looking to shows after may / june.

 

If this is the quality that is coming out from the nest, any eggs that are due to hatch from the end of this week, id be trying to get next years rings on them. That way they will be a very good candidate for the 2009 nations in Tasmania.

Things are looking up, since I took a top breeder or two's advice and bought in the right breeding birds, Daz. I am noticing a marked difference in feather quality and length of mask, with of head and depth of the back skull, etc. I am culling many birds to improve. Learning to pair up now too....based on bloodline, good features and instincts.

Back to the same breeder for more birds shortly. :rip:

All the birds and babies are gorgeous Kaz. I'm so sorry about Barnsie , he was beautiful !!! And sorry about the attacked baby budgie. My boy Mayo had the same - his dad bit both his wing tips off when he was one day old. Plus he also bit some of his toes off :rip:

Those babies are absolute crackers Kaz, well done. Better get that aviary done you gonna have a few keepers to find room for!!

Got my first lot of rings on a couple of youngsters the last few weeks, missed the oldest as we had a litter of pups and I forgot about ringing...oops

Thanks for that :rip: The house is "too quiet" without Barnsie.

Lets hope your babies without rings arent THE ONES. But you can show babies without rings as a novice...only catch is they must be shown as an adult.
