Posted December 15, 200717 yr I'm making some toys for my budgies and cockatiels, and have ordered a whole lot of goodies from 'my parrot shop' online. I was also wondering if I could use spoons on their toys also? I was thinking of drilling holes in the handles and stringing them up, so they can be knocked together to make plenty of noise!!! Do you think this would be safe? Do I need spoons made out of something specific? Thanks all. I'll be sure to post some pics when my toys are finished.

December 15, 200717 yr Wooden spoons should be okay and also plastic coloured ones if they are thicker than the throw away variety. I am thinking of sharp edges if the tiels or possibly the budgies bite through the cheaper plastics. :)I also use bright coloured strong plastic bangles strung over the perches Edited December 15, 200717 yr by KAZ

December 15, 200717 yr Spoons are made from stainless steel, or all the ones i've seen have been anyway, and stainless steel is bird safe. Some come with a hole already to hang on a stand, if you have an old set you could use those.
December 15, 200717 yr Well spoons are used for humans to eat from, so they should be safe. Just not knives or forks. (Laughing out loud).
December 15, 200717 yr Author Well spoons are used for humans to eat from, so they should be safe. Just not knives or forks. (Laughing out loud). Thanks all! Yeah, I was kinda weary of hand knives and forks in the avairy... I'd hate for the tiels to have a fight... Bert holding the fork... 'give me back that sprig of millet' Ernie holdings the knife... ' no way, it's mine' (Laughing out loud) I'll be raiding the cutlery draw in the morning. I thought stainless steel was safe.
December 15, 200717 yr My main aviary has a lot of coloured bangles hanging from perches and the birds thread themselves in and out of them like a jungle gym. I also use a lot of brightly coloured baby toys and baby rattles ...the kind that are used for ***** and have attachments. Baby safe usually equates to bird safe too for whatever reason my word P R A M HAS BEEN EDITED AS A "SWEAR WORD " ???? Edited December 15, 200717 yr by KAZ
December 15, 200717 yr for whatever reason my word P R A M HAS BEEN EDITED AS A "SWEAR WORD " ???? Wash your mouth out with soap!!!! :hap: How could you say P R A M on a family forum. I've thought of using baby toys as bird toys, but the ones i've seen are expensive.

December 15, 200717 yr Baby toys are very cheap when bought secondhand at swap meets and garage sales I hadn't thought of that!!! I will have to keep my eyes out for some.
December 15, 200717 yr the only thing I worry about with spoons is the reflection just like a mirror so watch out for any type of protective behavior where they think they have to protect the budgie or tiel in the spoon . Very clever idea.

Very clever idea. Thanks all. Kaz, I'll have to watch what I say in front of my niece and nephew... and I was worried about the f word!!! I wonder if s t r o l l e r would be okay (Laughing out loud) I never thought of the spoon reflection thing. Thanks elly. Will have to keep an eye on them.
December 18, 200717 yr Author If i gave Ozzie a spoon in his cage he would think he was in budgie heaven... (Laughing out loud). very cute!!! He 'loves' his mirror twin Ozzetta
December 19, 200717 yr I saw a set of spoons for budgie toys at the pet shop not that long ago for $40 I went home and made one but I found that the started to stick together, my dad and I put little wooden beads between each spoon this way the spoons stay spaced and they also can destroy the wooden beads.

Just for spoons? I like the sound of the bead spacer. I will try that when I finially get mine made. I have all the supplies for this and more toys, but have been so busy it will have to wait...
December 19, 200717 yr I found that after I put the spacers in it worked really well except that now I have to take them out at night cause they make so much noise!
