Posted December 8, 200717 yr Hi everyone, I thought that it was time to get George a friend. I gave it some thought and decided to get a boy. The reason for this is because I heard that 2 boys are more likely to get on better than 1 girl and 1 boy and I wont have to worry about any breeding issues as I just want them as pets. I bought the new budgie from a local pet shop and I was told that it is hard to tell the gender when they are very young but was told by the staff that the beautiful white budgie is more likely to be a boy. Also, could anyone tell me the type of budgie it is? I was advised that the new budge is about 6-8 weeks old. Anyhow, after seeing the way that George and the new budgie behave I have a feeling that it is female. Could anyone tell what the gender is by looking at the photos? Any advice would be much appreciated. I am still happy regardless of what it is because they get on very well and I could tell he really needed a friend. I still haven't come up with a name because I want to be certain of the gender before I decide. Any suggestions for a name would also be fantastic. They can't keep away from each other. George is tame but spends less time with me because he prefers the company of his new friend. I still try to handle him because I want him to remain tame and hope the new one will be tame too. I have had the 2 together now for 4 days and they are inseparable. Is this a phase? Will there be a stage when they wont mind being apart and not being so close as they are now? Here are a few photos of the cute couple. Thanks, Vicky
December 8, 200717 yr My first concern and I don't want to be a negative nellie is I didn't read a thing about quaranting your newest addition. Maybe I missed the post but you need to quarantine all new birds for at least 30 days from your existing "flock" to ensure your new addition is healthy. Most bird illness can not be seen visually until it is too late. On another note he is very cute and I chose 2 males for the exact same reason as you I didn't want accident breeding without a nest box and have the stress of a female laying eggs which can happen :budgiedance:.

Thanks Elly, I thought I'd skip the quarantine process because when I had them in separate cages in different rooms George was getting very stressed because he could hear another bird chirping so I couldn't help myself but put them together because I felt sorry for him. I know this is wrong health wise and I will separate them now. I really thought my new one was female because of the way that George is responding to it. He is always preening the new one, feeding and always follows it. Vicky
December 9, 200717 yr males will preen each other it is a just like cat cleaning each other no matter the sex of the friend it is very normal. Merlin loved Pretty's preening and his head scratches. I would separate them it is hard I know I had a very tough time if you can put them in rooms where they can't hear it so much but with them together now it may just be fruitless since they have already has so much contact.
December 9, 200717 yr If you look at the cere or nose of your bird at this age around the nostral opening in hens will start to lighten in colour it will be a faint white brown colour where the cocks will intensify in colour towards blue as they mature. Either way a nice pair of budgies.
