Posted December 6, 200717 yr Yesterday I went to a pet shop to buy some seeds and doggie treats and of course I couldn't resist looking at the birds. The first think I could see was an albino budgie attacking another budgie, after that the other budgie had bleeding eye and it looked like he actually lost the eye . I told the shop assistant, so I hope he will do something about it. I really hope he will . I felt like I should buy him and help him, but since we've moved, my avian vet is far from us and my husband doesn't really want to drive me there all the time . But I feel bad The albino budgie was one nasty bird, she was protecting the food fowl like crazy and pushed all other budgies away I just wanted to share, as I cannot stop thinking about it . I hope the budgie will be lucky and gets treatment and maybe finds an owner who will have him as a single pet (And of course they had beautiful YF violet babies in there. When I was looking for them, they had none )
December 6, 200717 yr The poor thing. I hope it will be okay. And I really hope the pet shop staff do something about it, nothing makes me angrier than pet stores who leave sick and poorly birds in cages because they care more about making a profit than they do about the birds well being.
December 6, 200717 yr Author Once I actually found a budgie with splayed legs in a pet shop (I didn't know what is it at the time, so I thought it's some bad illness), I told them about it and they actually asked me what do I thing is wrong with the budgie and what shoud they do , they should know things like this when they sell animals !!! I told them I don't know what's wrong and they must take him to a vet. I hope this one has more luck (it's a different shop). They even sell big parrots like Cockatoos, African greys, Amazons, etc. so they should be experienced
December 6, 200717 yr I agree, they should know about things like that to sell animals. Granted, it can't be expected that everyone who works in the pet industry to be experts on all the animals they sell, however, when you think about it, it's not difficult at all to learn the basics for keeping pets as happy and healthy as possible. For the budgies sake I hope they are more experienced aswell and will do the right thing for him . Edited December 6, 200717 yr by Bec Sta
December 6, 200717 yr Maybe they need more food stations for the birds too so the competitive thing is eased a little
December 6, 200717 yr Author Maybe they need more food stations for the birds too so the competitive thing is eased a little Yes, but not many shop assistant will like a customer coming to them and telling them what to do . The guy didn't look happy when I told him about it, but he said something like - he will have to catch him. I like this shop, so I hope they will take care of the bird. The thing is I just found out there are only 3 avian vets in the whole republic (that's what I've heard from lots of breeders), so the chance that people will travel far for one budgie who costs like $8 here is not good . So I don't know if they will bother . But I guess normal vet would be better then nothing.
December 7, 200717 yr We are only supposed to have 3 registered avian vets in New zealand, but at the vet teaching hospital there are 3 all together and none of these are included in the list. So what I'm saying is don't trust the list.
December 7, 200717 yr Author We are only supposed to have 3 registered avian vets in New zealand, but at the vet teaching hospital there are 3 all together and none of these are included in the list. So what I'm saying is don't trust the list. Yes, but most vets here would be specialized in dogs and cats. I think it's because they are the most common pets here. Even my avian vet told me there is another avian vet at the vet school in our city and another is in Prague (the main city). But maybe there are more, but I've never heard of them
