This will sound so uneducated but last day or so the female blue hen has been getting rid of her babies so im looking after them atm, then today i found her flying but ended up landing on the floor so i picked her up she didn't peck me normally like most aviary birds that don't get touched much do, well i put her back in the box and then a few hours later

i check up on her and she died like this http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb306/m.../Picture376.jpg

, i got told she was eggbound maybe, i feel like a complete idiot she was a very old bird but thats beside the point,i let something die because i wasn't educated about budgies enough for these situations to occur this gives me a hole new reason why i hate green budgies they're sex made and he makes me angry, but i guess thats nature

I thought i;d let out my sadness on the forums because im a very emotional person that loves all animals great and small.

I really hope she didn't die in pain

If you are breeding in an aviary you will get birds of all ages breeding...some too young and some too old. Its by removing the nestboxes and controlling the breeding in breeder cabinets that you will reduce chances of a hen too old breeding. Also easier for you to check on their health and progress. There would have been signs the hen was sick before she died, maybe even a couple of days before. Its really important to be checking the budgies bottoms for signs of illness and their bodyweight by catching them and feeling them.

I dont get your "angry at green budgies thing" ....to say green budgies are sex mad isn't right and it is up to you to control your breeding program and not blame a "sex mad" green budgie for allowing an old hen to breed. If too old she should not have been in an aviary with nestboxes and cocks.

Its a lot to go through for you Shaun, and you will learn things from this. Have you got any handrearing formula for the baby ? The yoghurt works for an emergency thing for a newborn and then move onto the handrearing formula. If you cannot get any of that straight away, I find you can use the baby cereal like Heinz mixed grain cereal....for a few days anyway. How often are you feeding it ? Do you have a warm place for the baby, like a hospital cage or a warm lamp nearby ? I hope your baby makes it. Its hard to raise them from so very young. You just do the best you can

The photo you showed is egg and biscuit looks like. Better for birds of 4-5 weeks old and not ones this young....mixed with other things. The younger the bird the runnier you make their food. In a 4-5 day old you would expect the crop to be the size almost of a small pea.

If you only got her from the petshop a year ago then she shouldn't be that old and that would not be your fault if she is old, it would be the petshops fault for selling you an old budgie and not telling you. All petshops should know how old their budgies and animals are when selling them. I would think that she wouldn't be that old anyway as some petshops have a habit of renewing their stock if it doesn't get sold.

You are doing a good job right now, taking care of the baby, it is hard work, I know, and you are doing well to look after it. :)

Perhaps you could invest in a heat pad, which you can buy at pet shops. They are very good, just like a hot water bottle, only you don't have to change the water every few hours as it is plugged into the wall.
