Posted November 22, 200717 yr okay last night on the way home from work I find out about a bird that needs a new home. We just have to convince it's current owner to give her to me. So a quick trip out, talking to a guy who believes that he purchased her for $200 and I should give him $175 for her. That she is 3 weeks old and he has had her for 2 weeks and got her from this breeder who has the best birds in Melbourne blah blah blah I end up with a new bird (and only $75 out of pocket :hap: ) This is my new little girl (and please tell me she is a girl!) and the "Mum put that camera away now please" look She has been very quiet since I got her home, a little shy. I also think she is on the thin side, going to see the vet tomorrow. I know I should not do things like this but I am a big softy when it comes to animals that need a better home. We have decided to call her "Flame" it was my bosses kids that called her that, other names where Deigo, Diana, Sonia, Autum, Spring, Yellow, Bird, but Flame won out. I have no clue about what she is or what I am going to do with her. I have another new bird coming on Saturday from a breeder that I know (a green hen) so we have quarra set up in two seperate parts of the house. Blue and Harley know something is up as they got moved out of the study into the living room. She made one tiny sound and Harley was screaming about it. I am a little worried about her but I think if I give her a few days she will come around as long as nothing is medically wrong with her. So my one has grown to two to three and soon to be four. Oh and thought you might like this picture. Here are my boys having a mexican stand off over the veggie pole!
November 23, 200717 yr Author Thanks I really would love to know if she is a he or a she! Guess the vet can tell me tomorrow I hope. Where is Kaz when you need her! :hap:
November 23, 200717 yr First of its more then 3 weeks old,if its from a top breeder it would have a ring on its leg,If so the colour of the ring & the marking on the ring.$75.00 might be a bit high.ut I guess thats better then $175.00 : It is very quite,to be siting on your finger.By the photo it looks okay.It looks to have a red eye,if so its a Lutino & there is a fair chance, its a cock. :hap:
November 23, 200717 yr What a story he had...hmmm (Laughing out loud). I agree with macka on what he said about the leg ring and such. Lutino girls are more common because they only need 1 ino gene to express the gene. From the pics I can't see the cere very clearly but we do have I believe in the FAQ a way to sex the lutino as the male cere will stay a pink. Congrats .
November 23, 200717 yr Have you checked to see if this budgie is GOLD PLATED ? I think possibly a girl, but this kind can keep you guessing. As far as the price paid or asked for, I have yet to pay that kind of money for the best bred show budgie. As long as you are happy, thats the main thing.
November 23, 200717 yr very beautiful budgie it looks like a hen but l'm not 100% sure since l can not clearly see the cere in the pictures.

Yes this is why I said Blah Blah Blah cause I think he was BSing out his backside! She seems quite, I think she is younger they he said. And I think the sitting on my finger is more of a "OH MY GOD WHAT IS GOING ON" rather then being quite. What a story he had...hmmm (Laughing out loud). I agree with macka on what he said about the leg ring and such.Lutino girls are more common because they only need 1 ino gene to express the gene. From the pics I can't see the cere very clearly but we do have I believe in the FAQ a way to sex the lutino as the male cere will stay a pink. Congrats .Yeah I read all of that, it's more of a wait and see thing, the vet however thinks she might be a girl as well so here is hoping!Have you checked to see if this budgie is GOLD PLATED ? As long as you are happy, thats the main thing. What is GOLD PLATED? And yeah I know I paid WAY to much for her but at that stage I just had to take her home, after seeing her and seeing what he had her living in, god I hate people who do that to birds. Also you are pretty spot on when it comes to sexing budgie so I am going to run with your guess very beautiful budgie :wub:it looks like a hen but l'm not 100% sure since l can not clearly see the cere in the pictures.I need to get some better pictures!Just thought I would add, I also got a call on the weekend about an older Green hen, she was bought from a pet store left in her cage for a few months when the kids went to handle her she bit them so now they want to get rid of her cause she is no longer tamed. She was suppose to be around 4 months. I don't have pictures yet but she is a very cute little green with a navy tail. Vet thinks she is nearer a year old. Also had to dr her wings as they had clipped her but had only clipped one wing and she is going through malt and has blood feather everywhere and one wing is a HUGE mess. I called her Mozzie as she bites something cronic! So that rounds off my 4. I had planned on getting another one from a breeder but the breeder ran me the the bird that she was saving for me died due to the heater not working in her aviary over the last week where Melbourne had the cold weather and alot of her birds got sick, she offered me another one which she is sure was not sick but I did not want to take the chance with my boys.So now I have 4, my mother is going to kill me!
November 27, 200717 yr Hey, I think that that little girl is worth a million dollars and $75 is a small price to pay to brighting up a little girl's life. Kudos to you. With the biting girl, try pushing back at her when she bites, this works as it unbalances them and they don't like it. To them bite finger= being pushed. This worked on my naughty girl, who rarely bites these days and will only bite if I am doing mean things to her, like examining her wings and legs. This method works well for a chronic biter with whom ignoring the biting does not work. Ignoring her when she bites might be good to try first as being with kids, they most likely reacted loudly and very entertainingly when they got bitten and their hand would probably shoot right out of the cage and away from Miss Mozzie, which is probably what she wants. But if your hand does nothing then she will wonder why biting doesn't work any more and may get bored. So try that before the pushing method Edited November 27, 200717 yr by Sailorwolf
November 27, 200717 yr Author Thanks for that will try both of those. My big issues is that she does not even like me being near the cage. I sit her cage next to my computer so that she gets use to me being around and last night she freaked out so much and threw herself around the cage so much that she broke of a wing feather. I then had to stress her out even more to get her out of the cage and try and fix it. I am getting disheartened (sp?) because my other birds as losing out time wise cause I seem to be spending so much time just getting her to settle down. Even changing her feed and water bowls have become a nightmare. I was up half the night worrying about it.
November 28, 200717 yr okay 1. You can not do much about it if she freaks out when you feed her. She needs food and water, so you can't prevent that, so don't worry about it. 2. Perhaps you could put a bit of rescue remedy in her water. Some members on here have suggested it, I personally haven't tried it yet. 3. Perhaps you should clip her wings, this would prevent her breaking more of her feathers and flying about in mad panic <--err on caution here though. I think it would be a good idea, others may disagree. It would be best to consider both sides of the argument for this one and form your own opinion. Edited November 28, 200717 yr by Sailorwolf
November 29, 200717 yr another thought , by the way shes beautifull, could ya cover all but the front of the cage so she has the back to the wall feeling, also when i got this last pair i have now, the hen bit, i ignored and it did finnaly work, if i actually try to restrain her without a towel she will still bite but not anyother time usually, [girls are bitie anywhay ive found, ] my boy i can clip wings and nails with my bare hands, also the wing clip is a good idea it seems to knock em down a notch while training or working with them, good luck, shes a beauty , juliet
November 30, 200717 yr I think you may find she will settle down once she is introduced to your flock when she is out of quarantine. I would personally stop fussing on her and let her be as that is what she wants. She knows your presence is there and it would not be ignoring her. Fussing on her is only upsetting you and her and right now if you are going to let her join the flock you may find that she may settle once she sees the other birds are not frightful of you or she may attach to 1 of your budgies and follow their lead.
December 5, 200717 yr Author Thought I would give you some new pictures (I have posted them somewhere else on the board but here they are again) mozzie She has started to settle down really nice now that she is in with the other birds. Still alot of issues but least she is getting there. All my babies from left to right, Flame, Mozzie, Harley & Blue
