Posted November 14, 200717 yr Hey i posted a topic about my new pet budgie acouple days ago i was just wondering i used to have a pet budgie it was a male i was just wondering im kinda curious whats the difference in behaviour in males and females? are females still great pets? whats the difference in temperament. and further info would be awesome all the same Thanks Shaun
November 14, 200717 yr Well my first budgie was a female and she was awesome. She was really tame and friendly, and loved to sit with the family, steal our food and get into trouble. Females don't chatter the way males do, and i'm not sure that they're as goofy either. But both sexes make awesome pets. :grbud:

November 14, 200717 yr Haha, yeah my girls love to nibble on me. We play hand wrestling and they love it. Hang on for dear life and then come back for more. They bite me, but not to hard, just nibbles, because it is all part of the fun and when they bite too hard I let them know and they soften it up. My boys like to flirt with my hand and do happy dances, sometimes they feed my hand. Some of the boys will wrestle my hands. The boys are more likely to entertain themselves than the girls, as in, boys are a bit more airheaded hehehe. I have a little gang of boys that like to all hang out together, explore the room, land on me and nibble my clothes then go off and flirt with the girlies.

And another thing i hear girl budgies are very vocal in the sense of making that destressed sound something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azWVVen9MQg but yeah i just need background ino and clear things up so i know what to do, im not sure if boys make the same sound often or whatever but yeah i love my little girl i would hate to hear her make them sounds if she ever did because we've got this budgie that can't fly and just hangs around on the ground (dont worry shes doing fine ) but everytime another budgie or i go near it it makes that sound it's a girl also, maybe shes upset because she can't fly or just a grumpy bird and gender has nothing to do with grumpyness? :grbud: Edited November 14, 200717 yr by shaunx
November 14, 200717 yr Well Merlin is a bitter and a nibber and he is a BOY but he is not a chewer. He is also vocal and learning to talk very well recently. I haven't had a girl to experience them :grbud:.

I haven't had a girl to experience them .Thats awesome so i guess gender only plays small part, thanks for all this info and sharing stories and all your budgie experiences because i was afriad that i'd have some mean budgie because girls seem to fight (Laughing out loud) heres updated picture of my pet 4weeks 1day old getting more used to me now still likes digging its head in places but when it calms down shes a sweety she even started prune on me So shes getting there I've got alot of patience when it comes to birds and time theyre such good companions
November 15, 200717 yr I was surprised that in all those comments on the YouTube video link you put up that no one corrected that person - that budgie is not female! I was tempted, believe me..... I have had many budgies of both sexes, and must say I prefer hens. I find them to have a steadier temperament with fewer surprises than males. Either sex will bite, but hens seem to bite hard and then are done with it (unless you tick them off again), while males hang on and grind at your flesh relentlessly. Hens are grumpier around other budgies, and have definite preferences as to which birds they will tolerate being near at any given moment. Males seem not to care and will share food and toys with other birds - usually they have better luck with other males as the hens tend to want toys and food all to themselves, LOL. But hens will bond just as strongly to you as a male budgie would. I don't think there is much difference whether they trust you or not. Right now I have 4 hens. They do not bite, they live together in the same cage just fine, and 3 of the 4 are able to be handled without a problem. The one that I can't pick up is an older hen who I think was teased before I got her, but she has come a long way! She will land on me and preen my face, and also will take food from my hand and will fly to me when the food is coming! 3 of the 4 also talk to varying degrees. They are the more aggressive of the sexes, but are not as hyper as males and will not chatter as constantly as the boys do.
