Posted November 11, 200717 yr He's pretty quiet (and still unnamed) and i dont think that he's been eating. Is something wrong? I've also tried offering millet sprays - holding it from my hand and he just ignored it. he also doesnt seem to communicate with my other budgie (whos 5 years old). When i bought him (he was a wild bird) he was interacting fine witht he other wild birds in the cage.
November 11, 200717 yr Typically new birds may not eat for the first few days and if they do you probably won't see them. Check his seed dish to see if there are any husks inside. They may also not appear to drink as well, but will only do so when you are not looking. Just offer him a variety of treats and perhaps put his seed in a dish on the ground as he may not know how to eat out of the seed containers that come with cages. Just a question. Do you have him in quarantine? Quarantine is very important as it helps to prevent the spread of new diseases into your existing budgie population. Even though he may appear healthy a new budgie could be carrying a disease that may not come out until it is stress. Thus it is good to quarantine your new bird for at least 30 days to ensure that it is not carrying any diseases, which should show in that time. It also gives you a good opportunity to bond with the birdy and observe whether it is eating or not much more easily. Edited November 11, 200717 yr by Sailorwolf

November 11, 200717 yr Generally you will need another cage. These can come in handy for trips to the vet or for hospital cages and quarantine cages. Look in the FAQ sections as there is a lot of information in there regarding quarantine and general stuff. You quarantine them by putting them in a separate cage in a separate room for the 30 days. Are you able to borrow a cage? Edited November 11, 200717 yr by Sailorwolf
November 11, 200717 yr You need to quarantine that is so very important as Sailor mentioned and having an extra smaller cage around is very practical in case 1 budgie was sick and you had to separate them. I think to remember is that he is brand new think of when you are put into a brand new situation how observate you can be and quiet before you know the surrounding. Another reason to have an extra cage in case the 2 budgie don't get along you will have to house them separate. If your older budgie has been the sole budgie for 5 years this is a huge change for him also. I would start out by getting another smaller cage today, doing the quarantine as suggested therefore you can observe if he is eating by seeing if there are empty shells from the seed you are providing him, and get to know him. Then when quarantine is over you can reintroduce them side by side in the cages. By that time your new bird will be more comfortable and your existing bird would have gotten comfortable with the fact that there is another bird in the house because he will here him singing and such. Do you have pictures of your birds to we can ensure he is a he? Unless you know how to sex them already just asking because (sometimes) females are quieter then males. Welcome
November 11, 200717 yr Another thing that must be mentioned here is that sick budgies are always quiet too, so you need to know if your budgie is well. Has he got a poopy bottom at all and is he sitting "fluffed up" ?
November 11, 200717 yr If you need a cheap spare cage check Bunnings or Magnet Mart, i got a small cage which does a good job for quarantine or traveling to the vet for $10.
November 12, 200717 yr Author hey a lots happened from yesterday to today. Mu budgie (finally got a name - Batman) has vaguely learnt to eat off my hands and go on my finger. Thanks for all ur comments...i will buy another cage tomorow. Is quarantine basically putting a bird into a diferent cage? so i dotn have to give any medicine or anything?
November 12, 200717 yr All new bird(s) should be in quarantine for about a month before you put them together with your current bird(s) - so if the new bird(s) are sick or something, so your current bird(s) don't get it too. The quarantine cage shoud also be in a different room then the current bird(s). It's always easier to treat one bird then all birds (in case of illness). You don't need to give any medications, if the new bird is healthy. It's good to take him to vet for check up if you can just to make sure he is okay, or just watch him for any signs of illness Edited November 12, 200717 yr by Zebra
