Arkady Has Hurt His Wing

Featured Replies

Well for the past month I have been wondering why Arkady hasn't been flying around so much and been gaining weight. Usually he is in good shape. And then I figured it out after seeing him flick his left wing up and hold it sometimes. Just listening to him fly, he sounds quite different to the others as if he is flapping as little as possible so as not to use his wing. So I took him out and palpated both his wings and I found that when I palpated his left wrist he squarked and was not happy. So I have taken him out of the big cage and put him and Isis (for company) in my little hospital cage and have put him on cage rest. Until after exams when I shall take him to the vet. He seems to be quite happy now that he is not being bullied by the others (cause he is less bulshy than usual with a sore wing) I was wondering though, whether it would be a good idea to perhaps clip his wings to further prevent him from using them so that his wings could have a better chance at healing and thus I could also rebond with him (the babies, well they are almost a year old now, take up most of my time hehe, little brats). However I have never clipped his wings before. But if it's what helps him and is for the best, then I shall do it, cause he still flies to get from A to B but after flying he holds his wing. What are your thoughts?

Ps. I know how to clip wings that is not what I'm worried about, I would just like to know your opinions before I decide to do it.

I would think that its best all reserves goes into healing the wing and not into new feather growth. Keep an eye on it though. I had a bird like that and before long a lump grew at the joint and it did not have a happy ending. Hopefull Arkady's is just a sprain that will heal quickly.

but he wouldn't grow his feathers until next moult any way. Clipping not plucking :yellowhead:

Yes I'm hoping that it is just a sprain

I would put the bird in a small cage & there will be no need for him to fly.In

a week or 2,he should be okay.If not.its unlikly that it will. :angel1:

Well after a day of being put into the smaller cage away from the other brats, he is quite a bit happier and is singing and head bobbing a lot more.

Hi Sailorwolf,

I wouldn't clip it. Kazumi had a sore wing for a while and during that time he was flying a bit more awkwardly, but it did heal. Just let him rest it for a while and see how it goes.

Feathers.

ps. I didn't know they had a wrist, I thought they only had, like, shoulder and elbow joints. As they say, you learn someting new every day.

Yep they have all the same bones that we have in our arm, apart from the thumb. They also have all the same bones in their legs too.

You'll have to click on that picture, it didn't come out very clearly with the downsizing

Sailorwolf, I have changed it to a link as it exceeded board guidelines, so people have to click on it anyway to see it in detail. As I said in the post below it is quite amazing to look at. Feathers

Sailor,

yes, I saw that. When you mentioned it I looked up the bone structure of birds and saw that they had a carpal and then metacarpal and philanges at the tip of their wings, amazing!

Feathers.
