Hi I was wondering if someone can post up a picture of exactly where to cut the wings im keen to do this with my new ones and let them grow them out after they are tamer

We feel for the safety and well being of the bird that it is best to be shown how to do this in real life with an avian vet.

I agree completely with Nerwen. For the well being of your feathered friend, it's best to have an avian vet show you how it's done.

 

And also weigh up the pro's and con's of clipping before having it done. For example, I had my budgies clipped because I have three younger sisters who constantly "forget" that the budgies are having out-of-cage time and leave doors and windows wide open.

 

However, I don't think there's any harm in learning the theory behind it.

:ygbudgie: I totally agree! You must be shown by a qualified expert (I had a bad incident with my late Rosey Bourke about 7 years ago which required expensive after hours vet care). As a result, I am very conservative with those I clip now but you must be shown the proper technique.

well i have a normal vet down the road, but the closet bird vet to me would probably be in brisbane, 6 hours away thats why i ask. My dad used to do our birds occasionally and has said he would do it but id rather do it myself

call the normal vet and see if he can show you many do know how to clip if he doesn't then you can call the local pet shops that have birds they many times will do a wing clip to. I agree with everyone here. I have seen pictures and I have even seen it done but have not yet tried it myself.

Maybe some one who does it often could put a clip on youtube or something?

You can, if you do a search find instructions on how to do it. If you do decide to do it, have some cornflour with you to blot up any bleeding that may occur from cutting a blood feather.

Sorry I didn't look at your location, you can check with the vet to see if they know of a closer avian vet. Or look for a good pet shop, many have clipped birds in the cage and are sometimes able to show you how.

I dont know if im really going to have to as the main one i wanted to clip will sit happily on my finger for ages ...

Although some petshops are idiots and don't actually know how to clip wings

and vs versa vets there are some poor ones out there that clip too. You have to do your research.

 

I think Briony you really need to call around and find out if they clip vet, avian vet or petshop they will let you know. Find out if there is an avian petshop in the area or one that deals with birds on a regular basis. Either way you can find your answers by doing a google but we here on the site don't want to be responsible if something goes wrong with the clip (at least I don't).

Well then you probably won't need to clip his wings. I think the greatest reward is when a bird that is flighted chooses to be with you.
