Posted November 1, 200717 yr I think the breeder we found has given us a bum steer? We bought 3 hens and 4 cocks from him to breed with as he new because he asked us a lot of questions as to what we wanted to do with the budgies etc. Well 1 hen was out of condition, the 2 others have laid eggs and broken them all, 1 of the cocks only has one leg and a stump for the other (he chewed the foot off when his leg ring got caught on something), the breeder assured us that he could still mate and was very experienced at it - we found that he just sat in the corner of the breeding cage and when he did try to mate just kept fallling off. I have put them all out into the aviary this afternoon and checked the leg rings to log them into a journal and they are all 01 and 02 birds. Isn't this to old to breed from? I feel like we have really been had with these birds, especially since we paid nearly $200 for them. We won't be going back there again.
November 1, 200717 yr thats disappointing to hear, but personnally i would have checked them before i paid. nearly $200 for 7 budgies you would expect quality and top birds. as a breeder myself i wouldnt sell dud birds to other breeders and i tell them whats wrong with them then its their choice if they want the birds, but i would take the duds to a pet shop. some breeders dont give 2 cents about their birds and other breeders except how to make an easy dollar.
November 1, 200717 yr I would say, if you want to sell them, then sell them from your home rather than a petshop as that way you can screen your buyers and you will get more money back for your birds
November 1, 200717 yr Well Denise....I can understand your dissapointment.....there are breeders and there are breeders.... I have had the same experience in the past.....the trick is to find a good one and to to them....
November 1, 200717 yr Denise,Are these the birds you brought a few weeks back,if so what is the ring code.
November 1, 200717 yr He certainly did not look after you at all Denise. He sold you the worst in his aviary. Even though the price per bird wasn't high, many good breeders out there will sell you younger fitter birds for that and sometimes less. All I can say is...."what a mongrel" !!
November 1, 200717 yr Macka, well done! When you asked for the rng code I thought something was afoot. These backyard mill breeders that don't give a hoot about their birds give good breeders a bad name! Denise, everyone has been so enraged about the breeder nobody has answered your question: yes, they certainly are too old. A hen should not be bred past 4 years of age and a cock 6 years. Feathers.
November 1, 200717 yr Kaz,Iam looking into this & if I have my way, there will be a refund. Good on you Macka
November 2, 200717 yr Author I am very sorry, after re-reading my post my finger has slipped on the 2 instead of the 1, they cost us $100. That will teach me to check my posts before posting them...oops

Yes that's true. They're still nice birds and look great in our aviary, just can't reproduce.
