I take George out of his cage every so often and he sits on my hand for a while. He always walks back to his cage when he wants to but what I was curious about is that once he enters his cage and sits on the perch he flaps his wings madly for about a minute. I am not sure why he does this but it is always after he has spent time sitting on my hand? Does anyone know why he does this?

When my budgies did this it was when they were clipped and they could not fly about, I believe it is a way they exercise their wings since they don't fly as frequently as unclipped budgies. Merlin and Pretty both stopped this when their flights grew in. Clipped or unclipped it is a form of excerising their wing muscles.

I agree with Elly,. Anytime I see that behaviour it is always done for exercise of the wings. My 'pet' budgie does it sometimes eventhough he gets to fly everyday outside of his cage.

 

 

Feathers.

My Charley used to do this and as his wings were clipped I thought it was a source of frustration but now that his flights have grown beautifully and he gets out daily for a fly around, he will still do it when in the cage. I'm also thinking now that it must be a form of exercising his "muscles" as well as just pure excitement!

Definitely flying or wing exercises. Even my princess parrots babies are wing flapping furiously as practise and they havent even got all their body feathers yet

My newest baby, does it just for fun. He'll often zoom around the room, then land on the cage and hold on for his dear life, while still flapping madly away. he loves it.

Both my budgies and my teil do this. For the budgies I belive it's just to exercise the wings or out of excitement. My teil does it whenever he's on top of his play gym as if saying "mine all mine". hehe

I also noticed that Milly loves to do it when she's moulting. It makes the fluff and feathers float around and she loves watching the mayhem that ensues - particuarly me getting grumpy about having to clean up the mess!

Oh . Cado is doing it also but I thought it is a form of excitement . Usually it's after he ate and I am talking to him.

i have changed the cage from the big to small and then back to the big. Once he got into the big cage that he used to, he started to flaps his wings madly. I think it was sign of excitement, as he was really !! happy to get back into his cage
