Aviary Roof Problem?

This is a photo of the aviary we have under construction:

It is 4000mm x 2000mm x 1800mm

1300mm covered roof and 2700mm wired roof.

After reading through the Aviary posts I have learnt that you shouldn't have an open roof because of the wild birds pooping.

Could we put shade cloth over the wire on the roof or would it be better to cover the whole roof in (birds wouldn't get any sun if we do this)?

Try some clear corrugated sheets on top...alsynite I think they call it. We have some on various areas of our aviaries. It will let light in but not wild bird droppings. Shade cloth will still seep rain through and the droppings on top will come through that way. Your aviary is going to be a great size. :P

You may still have to have some shadecloth over during summer, if the aviary isnt shaded enough and if the airflow is restricted and heat pockets build up in there. Shadecloth can be put up during summer, like a shadecloth sail.

What would you be using for the floor of your aviary ? As straight onto soil allows for mice and rats to dig tunnels into the aviary. Cement slabs are a good way to go. You could always put a layer of clean childsafe sand ( the type they use for kids sandpits ) down on top of your slabs. Cement slabs can be bought cheaply secondhand out of your local newspaper for around $2 each.Cheers kaz

We use corrigated sheets on our aviary too :D

Denise,Use some lazer lite sheeting,If the hawks can see the budgies, they willdrive them into the wire & kill the budgie.I have a bird mesh, that they put overthe grape vines. To stop the birds from eating the grapes. It comes out from theedge of the roof down to the ground about metre outn on the front of the avery & that stops the hawks hiting the wire.

Thanks for the information. We will put laserlite sheets on the roof to let the light in. We have bought 500mm cement pavers for the floor and will put down sand over top of them. I will also look into getting a shadecloth sail for the summer months.

It's all starting to come together now. Getting the ground ready to put the cement pavers down for the floor because the frame is coming tonight. Very exciting.

My 2 year old is helping dig the dirt out, much to Dad's delight...(Laughing out loud)

Hahaha....I went out this afternoon and when I came home the avairy frame was there and my hubby and brother-in-law were being very smart (or so they thought) They'd put the back wall on, the roof and the front wire. I asked them why they hadn't put down the cement pavers first and they weren't very happy - I won't print what they said. Lucky the front sheets haven't been put on, now they have to put the pavers in through the front hole...(Laughing out loud)
