When we bought this darling we thought it was a she but there seems to be a touch of blue in the cere. She has a bald patch on her head which was there when we bought her and hasn't grown back.

This is our new baby, about 2 weeks old. Anyone have any ideas as to the sex, colour and/or breed?

From reading up on the forum about whther the Mum is feeding it, it seems the baby is being fed. Would that be correct?

thanks in advance for any info :)

Your green bird looks like a boy to me. Cant tell much about the chick as we need more and clearer photos, especially wings and back. Crop looks full so Mum is feeding well. :)

looks like a dominant pied chick to me from the yellow patch on the back of it's head but like kaz said shots of it's wings and back would be good :) or parent details to help :D

I agree with Libby.

I would say your green bird is a boy too and may always have the bald patch, did you ask about it when you got him?

thanks for the info guys, I can stop calling her mother hen now :(Laughing out loud):

We initially went to buy only 4 budgies from a breeder and as we were leaving the guy offered us the rest of the birds (5 from memory) he had for an extra $30 so we took them as well. 2 of the 'extras' couldn't fly and the one in the picture had the bald patch. We didn't know about the birds that couldn't fly until we put them in our aviary and he didn't give much of an explanation as to the baldness of the one in the picture. Sadly, one of the non flyers has died :( but the rest have turned out okay. We just have the other non flyer inside as a pet. :)

Chances are high that your bald green budgie was attacked by a parent in the nest and nearly scalped as a baby...that and scarring would account for lack of growth and it is a common part of them to be attacked.

Thought i would show an update of our baby who is 1 month old now. Still not sure if it's a he or she.

Any ideas from these pics?

Might be a boy. But I don't completely agree with the sexing of the bald green bird. It has a lot of brown crusting over its cere, be this scaley face or not, it is very confusing. If you expand the picture to full size you will see what I mean. I'm not sure what sex it is but I would be more inclined to say female, but I thought I would just point that out. It has a fairly "masculine" look though :)

Hi Flipper,

your baby looks like a boy, but as Kaz said a clearer picture of the cere (coloured part above the beak) would help. Could you also get photos of your green bald bird's cere too.

Feathers.

I agree the pied baby looks to be male from that shot. Are you seeing a smooth pink even toned cere in real life?I agree the pied baby looks to be male from that shot. Are you seeing a smooth pink even toned cere in real life?
