I am going to try to get my budgie today. I am trying to get my mom to take me to go get My budgie.

I have a few questions...

#1 How can I tell male from Female?

#2 How should I put the budgie in the cage? should I stick my hand in the box or should I dump him out or should I do somthing else?

Thanks

Hi Budgielover,

firstly you need to read this FAQ... http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/faqs/i...&artlang=en

If you get a pet shop box, open it at the end that the bird's head is at and then put it in your quarantine cage. The budgie will come out when it is ready, or you can remove it from the box yourself if you are in a hurry for some reason. The budgie needs to be left to become used to it's surroundings. If it is a young bird make sure that it is eating. Supplying soft food or millet for young birds is also helpful.

Feathers.

A few hints, if you are buying from a petshop.

Do not believe the staff when they tell you the budgie is a boy or girl. They often get it very wrong.

If you are told it is a baby budgie, make sure it has bars down to it cere, no fully brown or blue cere, and NO iris rings. Otherwise they may be trying to sell you an adult as a baby.

Some petshops clip the wings of older birds to make them appear as babies and more tame. They get more money for hand tamed birds, so often try and make an older bird appear as one.

Many cages offered as suitable for a budgie in a petshop are very much the wrong kind. I think you may have your cage already though ?

You do not need a nestbox sold to you as a budgie bed. Many petshops will try and sell you one.

Any questions, please ask and we will be happy to help you.

If in doubt, do not purchase and come back to us and ask some more questions.Best of luck

:D

I will share a little story with you from my experience

Subject: Fluffy budgies

I was at a pet shop the other day and standing by the budgie cage. A lady was trying to decide whether or not to get another budgie. She said to me...I have had many budgies and every one of them has died within a week of taking it home, so I am not sure if I should get another, since they don't live very long. I talked to her for awhile...educating the woman....and after awhile she tells me every budgie she ever chose was the one that looked "the fluffiest" !!!

Lesson to learn. Please do not pick "fluffy" budgies. It means they are sick.

Great advise given here as to the Male or Female question look for a very pink and smooth cere for a baby boy, any blue white or rings around the nostrils can mean a hen.

I remember how excited l was when l got Sherbet :)

I also asked what they were feeding her, l bought some of their seed, but also bought some Trill, and l mixed the Trill and bird shop seed to slowly ease her onto Trill.

I don't know if she would have refused to eat the Trill, but l thought it was a good idea anyway.

I bought my cage when l bought my bird, and l bought the biggest one that they had, l know others here have said that pet shop ones aren't good enough, but l have posted pictures and have said its fine, just make sure its big enough for a budgie, try and get the biggest one possible, if not, the second biggest.

Goodluck with your new friend :D

I don't know what to say but......

I did not get a budgie. When i got to the store I saw a wonderful Quaker parakeet. I feel like I decived all of you and I am sorry. I just loved the personality of him.

Aww :)

In my opinion it doesn't matter what bird you came home with, as long as your happy, and the bird is happy and healthy :D

Enjoy your new bird! :D
