Posted September 8, 200717 yr Hi can i just say thanks for any advice in advance :hap: Now my question is this, i have 2 budgies and i have noticed that the 1 has cut himself, i also noticed that his claws are quite long, cud this have been what has caused the injury as it is just by his mouth where he normally scratches. The budgies have been in the same cage for the past 4 years and r a happy couple, never fight unless its treat time and the girl shows that she wears the trousers so to speak. If it is the claws is there anything i can do or do i just get sandpaper for the perches to help file the claws down over time ?
September 9, 200717 yr From my very short experience with budgies, l'd say yes that it is what seems to be causing the bleeding, after all, you said the claws seem to be too long? A picture may also help. One other thing l thought of, do your budgies ever fight? As for keeping the nails trimmed, l was advised against using sandpaper, because it can eventually do this: http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....showtopic=16025 (thats blood on the sandpaper) What type of perches do you have? I have found that with a particular perch, which is made of rough concrete, it has helped to keep my budgie nails short. Also, some cuttlefish l have found not only helps the beak, but also the nails if they climb on it (like my little one likes to do). I hope l have helped in someway, and l hope l'm right :hap: EDIT: Might just want to wait until someone else here with a lot more experience can clarify this for you Edited September 9, 200717 yr by Missy
September 9, 200717 yr :ausb: Get rid of the sandpaper perch covers, they don't help much, make their feed bleed and they tend to chew them which isn't good. You can get clippers and do them yourself (two person job) but FIRST have a bird knowledgeable party or avian vet show you how to properly do this or you may nick a vein. As well, have blood stopping products on hand should accidents occur but yes, you must get expert instruction on this. (I used to do this myself years ago but my eyesight isn't so good anymore so I rely on my avian vet) :dbb1:
September 9, 200717 yr Author Thanks for your advice ! i havent yet got any sand paper perches for them and i wont be getting any now thanks to your advice. I have wooden perches if that helps :dbb1: are they anygd ??
September 9, 200717 yr natural wood like branches from 'safe' trees are great for their feet and they like to chew them too- keeps them entertained. The dowling perches aren't so good as the nails dont get a grip on them to wear down, can also give the birds cramped feet being all the same smallish size. Variety in size is great. Clipping a budgies nails is like doing a cat or dogs- be aware of the quick running through the nail
