Posted August 22, 200717 yr I went into my local pet shop on Monday morning to get some toys, and the assistant asked how old my budgie was. I told her he is approx. 6.5 weeks old, and she suggested l get this "worming solution" to put into its drinking water. She said all l need is a few drops, and to do it when it is 8 weeks old, then 10 and then every 3 months after that. Just wondering if this is necessary, and if l should do it? I've never heard of it before. Thanks
August 22, 200717 yr YES probably. Budgies can have worms from their parents, so at this stage I would agree with worming your bird. BUT follow exact directions on the bottle. If you budgie is an inside budgie and not on earth floors in an aviary, you may only need to worm him/her for the first year.
August 22, 200717 yr Author My bird has only been in a cage, l have never taken it out as l'm scared it will fly away and l won't be able to catch it again. I alternate it between indoors and outdoors to give it a bit of variety. Nerwen told me to change the water everyday, so what would happen with this worming solution? I'd tip it down the drain everyday, how would l be sure that Sherbet is drinking the water?

Worms come from eggs that can be transferred from the parents. It would be worth worming the budgie at this age, but if you are at all concerned, check with your vet.
August 22, 200717 yr The only way to be 100% sure that the budgie is drinking the water would be if you saw curly droppings on the floor, which would indicate that the solution is working and worms are being expelled. Whenever you are giving any medication in water you should withhold any vegetables so that they cannot get fluid from their food, as then they are more likely to drink their water. I think worming is a very good idea. I do mine twice a year. They are on a concrete floor in an outside aviary. Feathers.
August 23, 200717 yr The advice the pet shop gave it good advice. All birds bought from pet shops and breeders should be wormed two weeks after getting them and then every 3 months.
