G'Day everyone!

I just realised that l probably should introduce myself here, although l have already posted elsewhere on the site!

My name is Sarah, l'm 20 and l live in Western Sydney (Penrith) in Australia.

I am a full-time surveyor and l'm studying one day a week for my Surveying Diploma.

I love ten-pin bowling and netball, and l play them each once a week (or more!)

Today l got my first Budgie and l found this site in google after l searched "Bugdie Care". I knew l had to join once l got my budgie!

Here is my Budgie:

It doesn't yet have a name - l'm not 100% sure if its a male or a female. My dad seems to think its a male. My friend suggested the name Cotton and my mum suggested Harley - she loves that name to bits.

Anyway, thats pretty much all about me :budgiedance: Looking forward to talking to everyone!

Happy to have you here Sarah :budgiedance: This is a great place. Full of helpful people, lots of great advice and with a great love of budgies in common. Your budgie looks very pretty. If you have a MACRO setting on your camera for closeup shots we may be better able to help you ID your budgie and help tell you its sex. Cheers karen

Thanks Karen :budgiedance:

I have another picture here, unfortunately my digital camera isn't very high quality (l got it pretty cheap!) but hopefully this one is clearer?

It seems very bored the last few hours its been here. I mean, its probably very very worn out - its been a big day for it! Also, l haven't got any toys for it yet. I can't wait to see it get lively!

Welcome welcome :budgiedance:, glad you joined.

The cere pics are too blurry to tell if it is a boy or girl

But if the cere is very pink and smooth you probably have a boy, if it is more whitish pink and have large white nasal rings you probably have a girl.

By the way I really like the name Harley

Hi Sarah! Welcome!! :hap:

Your budgie is gorgeous! I think cotton is a very sweet name!! Sorry I can't tell the sex from your pics but my eyesite is pretty bad :budgiedance:

I hope you enjoy yourself here

Thanks birdluv :D

I also have a quick question - should l place the feeder/water in the cage up high, or low to the base of the cage?

I currently have it on the same level as the highest perch, but its making a bit of a mess outside the cage :D

I woke up this morning and my budgie is still the same, doesn't do anything, doesn't move. Is there something wrong? I have also put one of those "honey sticks" up and l don't think its even taken a bite.

Could this behaviour and not eating the stick be related to being in a pet-shop birdcage during its short life? It has always had other budgies around it - so could it be lonely, is that why its not doing much?

Welcome to the site Sarah, even though the picture isn't that clear as others have said I'm going to guess it's a boy. I wouldn't be worried about how quite your Budgie is at this time if you only got it. It will be very scared with its changing surroundings, give it a day or so. Like you say it might be better if you located the food lower in the cage like you say, to stop seed going everywhere, just don't locate it under any of the perches, so it wont get soiled. When you first place new things like the honey stick it may take some time for your bird to get used to them & to try them, so don't worry.

it takes a little while for new bird to settle in and move about. Sometimes a bit of music played softly help them to relax.

Hey Norm :hap:

Thanks for the advice, l did move them lower and l think its better :)

My bird has chirped a little, not much, and it likes climbing! It climbed up the side of the cage and it went back down to the bottom and tried to do it again!

I also put my hand in the cage to try and coax it to go on my finger (it has done so quite a few times since l brought it home) and it jumped onto the honey stick and started eating it :D

Thats fantastic! Sounds like you are making great progress already :) Don't worry about him being quiet for now, he will settle in and come out of his shell, or it could be his personality, my little Sunshine rarely makes any noise, he is a quiet shy little budgie, always has been, but he is still happy and does what he wants to do :hap:

I think its a little shy-ness but also he's getting tired!

My dad came home this afternoon (around 6pm) and was looking forward to watching the bird play and chirp. Unfortunately he didn't, but my mum said he was chirping like he was having a conversation with himself all afternoon and climbing all over the cage!
