August 14, 200717 yr This is why you need a protection authority like the RSPCA. People like that give the good breeders a bad name. We spend a lot of money making sure our birds are fit. I have a number of people asking to buy my birds but I don't want to sell them at the moment. I have a few that will be going. As I explained to one person today, I am not in the hobbie to sell birds but to breed strong healthy birds for the show table. Having to sell the birds is unfortunate for me to comply with the council regulations. The good thing is that I am monitored by the council.
August 14, 200717 yr I can't help but wonder whether there is more to the story of the "breeder". What has happened is horrendous to be sure, but if he WAS once a decent breeder, then something must have happened to bring him and his birds to this state of decay. It's easy to say set the RSPCA onto him and punish him, but what if he is in just as much need of help as his birds were? What is his state of mental health? Is he suffering from depression as so many people are (so BeyondBlue keeps telling us in their ads). Perhaps he needs more a visit from a competent social worker, doctor or psychologist instead. But as a society, we tend to punish first, and not bother to ask the "why" at all And so it keeps on happening ... KathyW. You have an excellent point Kathy. It reminds me of the situation that Kaz has been dealing with, with her Uncle and the feral cats. As stated he didn't want help or was not in a state of mind to see he was doing anything wrong. I guess though sometimes that is where the family & the authorities need to work together in the best interest of the person and the pets so they both get the help they need. Very sad situation in the end for both parties.
August 14, 200717 yr Yes, as horrible and heartbreaking as it is for the animals, sometimes a little research into the person behind it tells another sad story. Its hard to know what would be more desirable, someone doing it on purpose, or someone who is so sick they can't help it. I love the name she chose for the bird! May he continue to endure so he can have a happy home. Getting a healthy bird that looks the same is a funny, cool idea, which might work for a 5 year old, but someone who is 10, particularly such a compassionate girl, it probably wouldn't work. If he didn't have ANY distinguishing marks, I could see it possibly working, but the risks would be too much in my opinion. For a girl who's done such great things for these animals, it would be a shame to taint the whole experience with a lie from the adults. I get the impression that she would understand Eduro's death and not take it too hard.

KathyW. yes, that is true. that it could be a mental health problem. l'm sorry if l had sounded harsh in my original post. it is just that l have seen alot of abuse cases that just makes my blood boil. l was asking what would happen if he was found guilty because l'm not from Australia, l was just wondering if they dealt with it the same way they do in north america. so, how do they usually deal with situations like that?
August 25, 200717 yr Author Been meaning to post this for a few days. Endruo passed away they think it was just all to much for him. Katie has been really good about it and went to the vet to say a final goodbye. We are now on the hunt for a good breeder, however I do know the lady who I got Harley off so going to call her and see if she has any, also the breeder that I got Queenie off I think has a hen sitting on some eggs so we will see what happens there. Thanks for all your well wishes. Also the RSPCA told me that they are going to fine the "breeder" and ban him from owning birds again. I did ask them if there was a reason behind the downfall, eg mental or financial... the agents say that they could not see one. he has a new car in his garage and works full time, it just looks like the aviary fell down and he could not be bothered to replace it. Makes me sick!
August 26, 200717 yr That's so sad the last little guy died. I'm so glad that "breeder" is going to be banned from owning birds again! I hope you find a good breeder with a healthy and happy little budgie for Katie. :ausb:
August 26, 200717 yr aww that is sad the little one didn't make it, but l'm glad that breeder got banned.
September 30, 200717 yr Author Just wanted to updated on this. About a week ago my sisters boyfriend's mother who has a bird called perl asked me if I knew anyone looking for a bird. A friend of her's passed away in the last few weeks leaving behind a 3 year old boy called "Sexy". He is Blue (looks alot like Harley) also has been tamed and has about 20 word up his sleeve. I took Katie around to see him, he has been a bit stand offish as he was very well bonded with his owner, but he took to Katie straight away, spent about an hour tying to undo the ribbons in her hair. Two days later Katie took him home (via the vets) and he now is living with her. Yes he was not the Baby Budige that she wanted but he was a tame budgie that needed a good home. I will have to get some pictures of him and her when I see them next. Her mom is not that happy about the name but really happy about the fact that Katie is happy. Katie's mom works from home so Sexy spends most of the day flying around the house talking to her and then when Katie gets home comes and sits on her shoulder, but the funny thing is when he decides that it is time for bed he says "Going to bed" and flys into his cage! Love it! When he wants out of his cage he hangs on the door and screaming "Wake Up" till someone lets him out.
September 30, 200717 yr adorable. What a lovely end to a horrid beginning. Look forward to hearing more. :ausb:
September 30, 200717 yr Glad to hear he has another one to warm his heart and a great job to Katie for taking in an older bird.
October 1, 200717 yr :(Laughing out loud): Sexy, interesting name. I'm glad she finally got a budgie friend though.
October 2, 200717 yr Wow......I just read the whole story and like so many others, I had tears. I am glad Katie has had a happy ending and as said before, Kudos to you, Katie and her mum for your actions and at least putting these poor birds out of their misery. I think Sexy is a rockin name!!
October 2, 200717 yr That's cool she got a new friend. I can't wait to see some photos. Love the name - Sexy
February 26, 200817 yr When my four year old daughters budgie died last year, we told her he was staying at the vets for a few days. We replaced him and really thought she did not know. Then last week when her aunties budgie passed away she said " Why don't they just get a new budgie that looks like pete and call him pete too, like we did when bluey died. My husband and i were stunned
March 9, 200817 yr :D that is funny as. :hap: :hap: (I'm talking about the last post) Edited March 9, 200817 yr by JimmyBanks
March 9, 200817 yr I must have missed this last year because of uni. I just burst into tears what a terrible story, the bit about the 'breeder', reminds me of how messed up the world is and how we must keep fighting for the animals we share the world with. The vets and nurses (I assume it's the place I worked at), they must have been so horrified. Yet I have tears of pride, I am glad this case was resolved, hats off to you for taking these birds away and sparing them a slow, painful life and death. What a brave and responsible girl Katie is, hope all is well with her and her budgie. Edited March 9, 200817 yr by Chrysocome
March 9, 200817 yr I have not long joined this site and only came accross this thread tonight. I am shocked, saddened and very angry. Those poor birds, and poor Katie. What a dreadful introduction to buying a budgie. I hope her and "Sexy" are getting along well. Michelle
