Posted August 1, 200717 yr Hi everyone, Some time ago I asked a question about keeping three budgies together. A number of people replied. We have a thriving community of three birds and havign seen how they relate with one another, I wouldn't go back to keeping two birds again. This is the second community of three birds we have had (two birds having passed away one through old age and one because the vet made a mistake). The birds seem freer to make alliances - which with budgies is frequently! Also they seem lees stressed. We have had no squabbles over food, no pecked feet, just a lot of noise sometimes when they all decide it's evening roost time. Anyway it has been a great success and we intend to keep a community of three. Lynn
August 2, 200717 yr that is wonderful...that is a good question what are the sexes of the bird we do have people that come on that have issues because of the ratio of male to female
August 2, 200717 yr I had an issue with 3 budgies and they were all male. I have to disagree that I think an even number works much better .
August 2, 200717 yr Great that its working for you! We don't have an issue when Baby visits Cupid and Psyche either. But then maybe its because she only visits. Sometimes its overnight, but not often. However Baby seems to have her own definition of personal space, which might help the situation. *L*
August 5, 200717 yr I have 4, 3 stick together and are friends, but Bobby is ignored, and squabbled with and pushed around, I don't know if this is because Bobby is blue and the others are yellow or if because Bobby and I are bonded like we are he wants nothing to do with them, or they push him away because he is 'weird' Budgie weird that is... to me he is perfect! The other 3 really aren't that interested in me at all and never come to me voluntarily, where as when I walk into the room Bobby often flies to me and always follows me out of the room. It is interesting to note also that Sherbie and Sparkie are a bonded pair, and have both welcomed Sunshine into their little group, but are not interested in Bobby at all, and Sunshine has completely rejected Bobby too now. Oh maybe they are in a little "S" name group that they have formed they all have a lot in common!!! Just wondering out loud here but do budgies perhaps feel jealousy? Since I noticed that Bobby doesn't mix with the other birds and also because he is so tame/bonded to me, I tend to lay the attention onto him in front of the other birds!! Step ups and talking to him, making noises then I take him out with me, I wonder if they are jealous of Bobby I do TRY to give them the same sort of attention though and they fly away so its their own fault really hehe! Sorry to hijack your thread, I am glad your 3 are working out well for you
September 1, 200717 yr Author Hi everyone, Some of you have asked about the sex of the three birds. The first trio was two females and a male, the current trio is two males and a female. Both combinations seem to be okay. Just as a matter of interest, we have had an unusual visitor to our garden; an Eastern Rosella. We think he is a male. He seems quite shy. We are not too sure if he is a recent escapee or has been out for a while. Lynn
September 1, 200717 yr Very neat I am glad it is working for you, it shows that what we believe to be true can be proved otherwise :ausb:
