Small Baby Bird Gender?

Featured Replies

Posted

I just bought a keet and I think its a male. It has a blue cere. I just found out that no one can tell the definate gender of the budgie until later. Is there any way I can tell if its a male or female NOW?

If you have a digital camera & can post a picture on here, showing a close up of it's cere, some of us can give you some idea. Some are difficult till they get older, but sometimes you can tell, even when quite young.

If you don't have a camera look for photos on here of other peoples birds & see what others have told them & maybe you can work it out for yourself.

It's a bit hard to tell due to the flash. Do you have another picture?

How old is the budgie?

it's hard to tel with the flash glare but I would lean towards a young female.

how old are your other birds? Also are you quarantining this new bird? It is best to check for signs of illness which the stress of the move to a new place can bring out, which can then in turn infect your existing birds.

I just got that bird. I think he is still small 0-4 months, since he has full black eyes. My other birds have white around their eyes, you might me able to see one on the lower right corner. They have white inside and round the black. I'll try to get another picture. I'd try to take him out of his cage, but his wings aren't clipped and he isn't fully tamed... Bue I'll try...I hope I have a male..but whatever I get is what I'll have to live with and Ill still love it the same..

And no im not quarantining him. I just put him in.

i would say young male. A picture without flash would help

K...I got more pics..but I don't know how to get the flash off my camera...but Ill read the manual. And I got more pics. Some are of my other birds. Its with the photobucket. The bottom of his cere is violet/purple and it fades up into a light blue.there is a little bit of white at the top.

It’s hard to tell from those pictures, the last one is the clearest, but because of the flash you don’t know if that white look is real or just because of the flash. It’s good to take a picture in good natural light where the flash won’t come on. If that white look is true I would lean towards it being a female.

Your description matches that of a young female. And she looks like a greywing skyblue.

Usually if they are younger than 4 months and have blue in their cere they are female.

I agree with Norm not quite sure because of the flash

cute pics

But..there is no white on the cere. Just light blue faded into violet.

Here...I have pics without any flash....I finally figured out how to....As you can see, there is no white on the cere anywhere...Its violet on bottom, then fades into blue.

:D

Do you have a macro setting on your camera for closeup shots ? It helps, as your close up photos are blurry. :)

so ur you're saying a shot from not so close up would help? Cause I will do that...I'm just seeing if I understand what u you r are sayin..

there is a setting on camera normal showing a tulip/flower shape that help with close up pictures not be so blurry.

I'm still sticking with hen with the colours I can see.

Well...that is the setting I am doing. It says Close-Up (for objects closer than 28 inches). Mine has a tulip.

sometimes you have to 1/2 way click it until it focuses and then snap :D

That is what I am doing... :D

I guess its just the lighting and the flash and everything... so, i'll keep trying trying trying!!!
