Little Eating Problem

Featured Replies

I always feed my budgies a huge variety of healthy food but two of my budgies just get fatter and fatter (fiby and buddy) they also eat vegetables and also seeds the entire day. I cant just limit the amoun of seeds I give them can I?? Than they would eat all the seeds and there would be notthing left for the other birds...

What should I do??

What is in the seed mix you are giving them Marlon ? Maybe too many fattening seeds in the mix. You may want to look at changing the type.

Are they in a flight or small cage? If the latter they may not be getting enough exercise for the amount of food available to them.

you can actually limit the amount they eat but it may not be healthy as they tend to forage naturally throughout the day.

if I am correct I was told 2 tablespoons of seed a day for 1 budgie plus their veggies/fruits/pellet

If the food dishes are in constant overflow that is not good :budgiedance:.

Homing in on their foraging instincts is best and I watched a PBS show recently about different types of animals in the zoo and how they used to feed them 3x a day until they learned this is not natural for them. By getting them to forage it drives their natural instinct and helps them stay in shape and provides a more natural enviroment.

I have that problem too and my budgies are in a big flight cage. I feed mainly canary seed mix, and that is better for them, and pellets and the odd bit of broccoli and spinach and carrot. (just got back from holiday so I need to go do some vege shopping)

well, everyday they get 2-6 hours flight time - that should be enough right?? SO Im either going to feed them a canary mix or a finch mix. Which ones better? Remember I will feed it to 4 of my budgies and two of them arent fat.

I had this problem too, some of my budgies were fat and some of them too tin. My vet told me that if they get enough veggies and fruit, they will be okay with millet only. But I thought they should get more various seeds, so I buy the seeds separatelly and make sure there is not too much of oats, and the oily kinds. And I mix some pellets in it too :D

And they all look much better now. I also started to use liquid vitamins, minerals, etc.

I'd prefer the finch mix, but either of them would be alright.

I am going to do some looking because I did find a good article about why canary food is not the best choice for budgies it was quite interesting.

I still believe foraging is an excellent idea along with doing an over haul in what they chose to eat. You see you can offer them fruits and veggies all day but if they eat the seed instead it defeats the purpose.

Budgies and Obesity here is a good article, I will look for the other one too.
