Hey all, here is the deal my budgies are 1 year and almost 3 months old. I put in the nest box when they were a little over 1 year, actually the exact date was: May 14 2007, when my female was in condition. Nothing happend AT ALL, and a few weeks ago I saw that she came out of condition, I was going to take the nest box out, but I didnt. A couple days ago I see that my female is now back in condition, and the nest box is still in the cage. Nothing is happening, is there something I should do to encourage them?

I would suggest you take out the nest box and reintroduce when she is around 15-18 months, most breeders will start their hens at that age as 1 y is still considered novice and young. I am sure you will also receive other advice here too :yellowhead:.

There could be a problem with the hen or cock's fertility.

 

Some factors to consider when dealing with an infertile pair of birds are as follows:

 

The ovary may be non-functional because the bird is really a male, too old, too young or ovary is diseased.

The nest box is unsuitable

The paired birds are incompatible amd have not bonded

Not the proper season

They may not be in breeding condition

poor diet

stressful environment.

perches unsuitable for mating.

males nails are too sharp for the female to allow mating.

they are not fertile

Instead of stressing out the two birds it is advisable to give them a break and try again down the road. If it happens again you should probably pair them up with a different mate.

 

clipping the feathers around the female's vent can help in some cases.

forcing them to have a clutch that they are not mentally ready is asking for diaster.

I would say wait for 1 or 2 months. It is a lot harder to get budgies to breed when you only have one pair. They are stimulated to breed when they hear other budgies singing. However it is not impossible to get them to breed, just a little harder.

Alright so sorry but I procrastinated with taking the nest box out just to see if anything would happen, and the past two days whenever I walk up to where I have them I see the female in the box either sticking her head out of the box or she would just be in the box, and the male would be standing on the perch everytime, I checked to see if there were any eggs but there are none.

 

Since they have never really been in or around the nest box this much any other time, do you think it would be okay just to keep it in there for a little longer?

looking around in just starting to go in the box is only the start, if they are going to breed from this point it could be another 2 weeks before any eggs appear. The hen need to be sure the nest is safe first.

Exactly, but I was just asking because when I posted this they were not going into the nest that much until yesterday and today.

Leave it in then. My budgies took two months before they went into the nest box, then another 3 weeks until they laid an egg. If she is going into the nest box, she is thinking about breeding.

Well just an update, all seems to be going well so far, today I saw them in the nest box more than ever, and my male was in there for the first time today. Well the first time that I know of.
