Posted June 29, 200717 yr I cannot believe it !! My budgies in the aviary are all so very desperate to breed and I cannot keep up with them. They are looking everywhere for little nooks and crannies in the aviary to try and lay eggs. I have had 3 pairs lined up in a corner of the aviary every day digging a tunnel into some soil in the corner to try and make a nest. I have filled in the hole every day for the past 2 weeks. I turn my back and they are head down pulling the soil out again to re dig the tunnel as it is the chosen spot of whichever pair gets there first. Every day, I am finding eggs on the ground laid from the perches. I have pulled 3 hens out of the aviary today as they have "egg-bum" and are about to lay more eggs from the perch No nests in the aviary, but that isnt stopping them. I am in the middle of making new breeding cabinets, but since my actual workload ( leadlights and stained glass windows ) has been so heavy lately I cannot get the breeder cabinets done fast enough for the birds that want to breed !! Is it the time of year, is it the rain, is it just that the birds are at their peak right now ??? If I had another 30 breeder cabinets I would have no trouble putting that many pairs down to breed to keep them happy. It never rains but it pours Edited July 5, 200717 yr by **KAZ**
June 29, 200717 yr It would be the rain that is setting them off. Since the rain over here my lot have been very flirty. I'm surprised that I haven't seen any eggs of yet.
June 29, 200717 yr Awe Kaz.....what a lovely site that must be......to have birds in such good condition and have a healthy enviroment to live in.....
June 29, 200717 yr Author The funniest thing is.....my birdroom is between two aviaries....every morning I have birds breaking into the birdroom in pairs....they make holes through doors and wriggle through gaps to get into the breeding room...always in pairs !!
June 29, 200717 yr I could sit there all day and watch those boys flirt with the girls or boys too . I loved watching Pretty flirt up a storm with Merlin

June 29, 200717 yr Must be even noisier at your place than usual, with all the flirting that's going on. Â Sure is, Bea. They are " talking " all night long too Well that's a bit rude of them! They need to learn some manners.
June 29, 200717 yr You can make an omelette for one person- with 40 eggs!!! :yellowhead: I shall come down and collect the eggs for you!!! OR I could put some pairs down at my house for you :yellowhead: hhmmmm....... 4 spare boxes!!!!
June 30, 200717 yr :ausb: Guess that was an evil comment made by me. Cheeky the cockatiel, laid a small budgie sized egg and is kicking it around, tried to sit on it and then gave up, my curse still continues and I have passed it along to you!! :budgiedance:

June 30, 200717 yr Kaz, I am having the same problem with flirting budgies and many pairs I could put into breeding cabinets, if only I had more of them. Fortunately I don't have as homely looking an aviary as you, so no dropped eggies. They do like to chatter when it starts to pour, no matter what the time. Even the budgies in the birdroom in the house have a little chatter party when they hear heavy rain. It's good to know they are happy and healthy. Â Â Feathers.
June 30, 200717 yr Author each day feels like easter and doing an egghunt in the aviary. I remove hens I think are egglaying to find yet more eggs in the aviary....I am walking around under perches looking up hens bums for signs of egglaying.
June 30, 200717 yr I am walking around under perches looking up hens bums for signs of egglaying.  That sounds like an invite for a 'budgie bomb' in the eye   Feathers.
June 30, 200717 yr My thoughts entirely, a very, very dangerous practice Kaz…. "What’s she looking for ?"…Bombs away!!! "What me...no it must have been someone else, I'm innocent". Edited June 30, 200717 yr by Norm

July 5, 200717 yr Author Well !! :fear :fear I thought that pair were eager to breed...bonking in less than a minute !! BUT........... I have a large green show type budgie in the avairy getting around to all the girls, eager as a beaver to breed. So I thought I would give him a chance. I found the girl he had chosen ( a grey green normal ) and put her in a breeder cage....she went straight to check out the nesting box and then sat on the perch and waited. Then I caught him and put him in. Faster than the speed of light !! he mounted her, bonking for all he was worth, her head turned around to him as he fed her while the action was going on !! Cannot believe my eyes !!  I turned my attentions to another show type green opaline boy who had been acting almost in the same manner. I caught him and put him in the next breeder cage. I then searched for a hen for him and found an slightly older opaline cinnamon Dominant pied green girl and put her in the cage. Same story !!! Action took only seconds !! AGAIN !! Whats with these birds ?! I have never seen anything like it. There's more like these ones in the aviary and I am building new breeder cages to help them out. Some of these show type boys certainly take charge of a situation. Lets hope their verility matches their enthusiasm    PS the first pair this topic began about have eggs Edited July 5, 200717 yr by **KAZ**
July 5, 200717 yr Same story here Kaz, although most of the birds in my aviary have been bonking for days but no eggs yet! I had a cock trying it on with 2 different girls although he had already established a bond with one of them. The second hen is only 8 months old and I have plans for her later in the year - he isnt mister right for my plans! I seperated the hen that he had bonded with, and put her in a breeding cage - minus the nesting box though. Introduced the male, no worries - and no mating happening after keeping an eye on them all day. This morning I introduced the nest box and within ten minutes they were mating like there was no tomorrow! This carried on for about half an hour and happened again this afternoon
July 5, 200717 yr Author Well, Patches....its either the weather or all our birds are in top shape right now
July 5, 200717 yr after 12 months without even an egg, i've moved house and currently turning a wood shed into another avairy, my birds will soon be laying eggs in their current home so i'm hoping they can hold off untill they move into their new home. this rain we been having kinda stopped me working on the new avairy.
