Posted June 28, 200718 yr Something just struck me as I was looking at #1 who was peeking at me from the hole of the nestbox... My nestbox is 55 cm above the cage's floor... When they will try to go out, won't they go splat down there? X_o Suddenly I think I should've put it lower down... Eep eep eep. What do you guys think?
June 28, 200718 yr Depends on how many feathers it has when it decides to fledge...mostly they fly or glide to the cage floor. They are designed for this in their natural habitat in the "wild" . In my old aviary when I colony bred birds ( many moons ago ) a lot of my nestboxes were 8 ft high on the aviary walls. I did not lose a single baby bird who died by fledging. Once in breeder cage I lost one baby who fledged ( too early...not enough feathers ) and its fall from the nestbox hole was only 10 inches.
June 28, 200718 yr Hi Michelle, if you are very worried you can attach a perch just outside the nest box for the little fledglings to hop to. Make sure the diameter is smallish so when they jump to it and grab on for dear life they can grip around the perch and not slide or fall from it. That way they get to practice a little perching, maybe some wing flapping before they get brave enough to move on.
June 28, 200718 yr If they are old enough to hop on the perch, they will be old enough to glide to the floor.
