Being Irresponsible...

So the story goes...

I was doing my normal weekly cleaning of the bird cage, and in the process my lovely Buttons (the yellow one) escaped from her cage, when the bottom fell out. I didn't have her wings properly clipped, so now she is gone...

So now what do I do? If any of you remember my posts from last summer, she was pretty dependent on Buttons, and was never very fond of me. And because I am the last thing she wants to spend any time with, I realize I probably should get a new bird, which I really don't want to do. I guess I don't know any breeders near my home town, and I don't want to buy another pet store bird. Would you get another bird?

Hi there, don't completely give up hope yet. If you have a spare cage try leaving it out with food in it and do the rounds of the neighbourhood with lost notices. Put them up in stores and vets as well in case someone has found her.

Feathers.

I would read this article from our FAQ FINDING YOUR BUDGIE there is good advice in trying to locate your budgie.

As for replacing him you don't have too. Merlin lost Pretty 3 months ago. Yes Merlin depended on Pretty but we have adjusted. If you do get another one remember you should quarentine for 30 days before they met.

Good luck.

If anyone else in your area keeps birds, ask them to keep an eye out for your little "Buttons". Often escapees are attracted to the sound of other birds, especially budgies. An empty cage with food on the bottom on the roof of the aviary has caught me a number new birds over the years - mostly budgies but once a canary!

Don't give up all hope yet.

I also have "found" a few stray and lost budgies clinging to the outside of my aviary....they were attracted by my budgies noise. Keep looking for yours...we have many success stories on here of lost budgies being found and returned. They usually arent too far from home either. :D

I hope you find your little one. I feel your pain very much at the moment. I was about to hop in my car to leave this morning and I heard a chirping coming from somewhere where there should be no chirping. I looked up and there was Ozzy sitting in my garage. The double automatic door was open. I looked at the cae and the cage door was open. I slowly reached for a remote , and began to close the door. it got halfway down where Ozzy took off and flew out. He was off, flying into the distance, leaving his partner angel sitting on 4 eggs, with no one to feed her, and one older young one still in the nestbox. Very sad. I looked for him, and really do hop he returns, but I have my doubts. Too many eucalypt distraction around.

:D Hope you get him back as well, and I would assume the temperatures there are more accomodating for his survival. Had to take an injured wild bird from work yesterday to my Wildlife Rescue lady and she had a cockatiel in there!! We have had rather cool and rather wet weather for the season and somebody found this wet, cold, starved, young cockatiel and brought it in thinking it was a wild bird!! Which was a rather good as if it had been taken to the local animal shelter (mostly cat and dog based), it would have perished. So she pumped this little tiel full of Baytril, force fed him for a few days, he is coming around, very friendly, loves her cuddling and scratching him and she will keep him as a companion in the wildlife shelter (she also runs a computer repair business). NObody has reported him missing and apparently he hasn't let out one peep yet! Taking him some toys tomorrow and maybe I get to name him!! The bottom line is, I hope you get your budgie back but if you don't, let us hope somebody else finds him and takes him in.! :D

Just keep trying.

Dave you should keep your garage door open in hopes that Ozzy comes back to feed his wife.

First off, thank you all so much for the support. I just feel so guilty and irresponsible...but I haven't given up hope yet I guess. I just hope she doesn't suffer if she isn't found.

I'm actually in the US, the midwest, so it gets to be rather cool at night (15 degrees), so I'm worried. Unfortunately it was also very windy yesterday, so the calls from Sheldon were probably muffled. I think if it were a calmer day, she would have come back to her. But for now, I have been putting Sheldon outside, in the cage (Yes, I clipped her wings!) and she spends a lot of time calling, but obviously to no avail. I also called the local shelter, and the local radio stations, and they have been airing my announcemnt. So, I know I have to face the facts, I guess because I know the odds are slim to none that she will return, but you never know.

dmcminn - I hope Ozzy returns too! :ausb:

:ausb: Hey, don't beat yourself up, accidents happen, put up posters, call your local animal shelter, put an ad in the paper, you just never know!! We have been down to 9 or 10 C here lately so it is much worse but it is 20 C right now so won't get as chilly tonight. :ygbudgie:
