Posted June 21, 200717 yr You really had to be there I am still gobsmacked !! :ausb: I had a breeding cage freed up, so I went in search of a pair of show types. The birds in the aviary, at the moment, are raring to go....desperately chatting each other up with a glint in their eye. out of the corner of MY EYE, I spotted a lovely light green cinnamon opaline boy of very good bloodlines. "you'll do" I said to myself and popped him into the breeder cage. I went in search of an appropriate hen, found the first one...a thought ran through my head about genetics ( I am learning, if slowly ) ...and then I put that hen back. I found a lovely green opaline hen, also of good "blood" . I put her in the breeder cage with the first boy. WELL.................. He immediately went to "work" on her, thrilled to bits he was....he got right in her face, head bobbing this way and that, so fast it would make your head spin. He had a "grin" from ear to ear...he was so impressed. She wasn't......she came at him with beak wide open and struck at him... ONCE... TWICE.... THREE TIMES !! Not to be put off, he moved in again, he made low and throaty little sweetly singing words to calm her down. He sang to her face, touching beaks...he head bobbed all around her head and face, he ran his beak through her head feathers and preened her like a veteran lover from way back Then, she bowed down and he stepped aboard............ and mated her on the cage floor Not ONCE... not TWICE... BUT THREE TIMES in quick succession. Here is me ........jaw dropped !! I could not believe my eyes !! All this happened in the space of a minute and a half....IF THAT !! Within moments she had found the nesting box and all you could hear as dusk fell, was the scraping of a budgie girl's beak on the nesting box walls ........( in love ) and making a new home for her future babies. I have never ever seen anything quite like the moves this boy put on this girl budgie !! I am so amazed !! Times like these you wish you had the camera in hand Edited June 21, 200717 yr by **KAZ**

June 21, 200717 yr Kaz, you wouldn’t see it in the movies, as I have seen what you say many times & it would be “TWO HOT” & it would get banned …(Laughing out loud)… When I was young & had Budgies I used to keep the sexes separated, that was the current idea. Well when I put them together within seconds they would be mated, soon after, the nest would be inspected & in 10 days eggs in the nest. The other day I had an experience like that…with a difference…not much fidelity among some Budgies at least. I had this Fallow male with a Violet Opaline hen…I had given them all the chances in the book, as I wanted some split Fallows & was desperate to breed some violets, something I haven’t achieved as yet. Well this pair had been madly in love for months, she laid eggs in the aviary, so I put them in a cabinet, apparently she didn’t like the nest, so laid eggs on the floor, but wouldn’t go in the nest. So after some weeks I put them in another cabinet, she went in the nest for weeks, never another egg. Well back in the aviary they went still madly in love together. Then some weeks ago I put them back in another cabinet, she went straight into the nest & stayed there, but weeks passed still no eggs, so at last my patience was finished. I caught her & returned her to the aviary & picked out a nice young Light Green Normal for him. Well what you described happens straight away, as if he had been kept in isolation for months. No sign of any regrets of loosing his long lost mate…maybe he was like me fed up with her. Edited June 21, 200717 yr by Norm
June 21, 200717 yr Author Amazing....just like people in so many ways, Norm. We have to watch closely and work out their personalities to be good budgie breeders and good budgie owners
June 22, 200717 yr Wish I could send you Comet, Kaz, he would put StudMuffin to shame!! I am NOT kidding!!
June 22, 200717 yr That's happened here last year Kas but the opposite, I put my double factor white hen which was of good blood in with a grey green cock of good blood also, Well! no sooner did I close the door on the breeding box, she had bowed and he was on top, I couldn't believe it the hen was the one that wanted it and that was really within seconds. I ran up to the house to tell Greg. Unfortunately she died in the nest but I managed to save her eggs. I had another experience just before, my grey spangle the one in my signiture and a lt green opaline hen I just put them in together and, did, he flirt within 5 minutes he was going for it not bad for a young bird. I got some photos of them, well I wasn't really perving, I was taking photos of my babies. Post later
