The Egg Layer

My poor Jewel is determined to lay eggs no matter what. She laid two clutches for me. When I came home from the hospital, she had started her third. I tossed those eggs. I thought when she moved to mom's she would stop laying but despite being in a cage with 12 other birds and no box she is laying again. They just drop to the bottom of the cage.

I've been considering bringing Sylvester (her love) back to my place. How will they react to that? I hope they'll both be okay being separated. I can't think of another way to get her to stop than to separate them. She has probably laid 20-25 eggs in total since January.

Seems she really wants to breed.

While I had my budgies in holding cages during the 2 year "construction" I had a number of occasions of hens laying eggs on the floor of the cages. I ended up having to put some in cabinets with breeding boxes as the eggs were often fertile and I'd come in of a morning to find a newly hatched chick on the floor of the cage!

Let her have her love and a nesting box. I'm sure they will be delighted to see each other. A clutch or two might get it "out of her system" till next year ;-)

Good luck,

KathyW.

Shawna I would think 2 clutches in a row is enough and you have to think about your situation (of course I know you are) and though she may be laying it means nothing if you can't take care of those babies or get them homes.

You know Robin has always dealt with egg laying budgies so you may want to pm her or she will see this.

I don't think because they lay eggs they want babies but they have an issue now which is common in budgie and tiels my avian vet said. It is very hard to get them to stop and very debilitating on the budgie.

:) OH NO !!!! You must keep her separated from her mate but even sometimes that isn't enough, is she sitting on them? :) Also don't remove the eggs as it will just make her lay more, hopefully she will stop at her last clutches total, mine always stopped at 5. But remember I am a pet owner, not a breeder and have had very weird and unwanted egg activity from all my species of birds.

Also make sure her calcium levels are up to par...a calcium supplement in her water will help. I dont think she is up to raising another clutch right now. Her body would be a bit depleted from all the egg laying and calcium going into the eggs. :ausb:

:ausb: Very good point Kaz! :)

Saffy ended up having two clutches with a total of 19 eggs. I refused to let her lay a second clutch, due to her age and the fact she had just had two!! She continued to lay a few eggs after I had taken the nest box away. She laid three on the floor of the cage and then stopped.

How many has Jewel laid since you took the nest box away? Because it takes a little while for their system to get out of breeding mode.

Well I haven't talked to mom in a few days so I'm not sure if she has laid any more. I definately don't want her to raise any more chicks. I don't want her to lay any more eggs either. I'll make sure that mom is giving her the calcium. What a girl.

I think I'll bring Sylvester back with me. :P
