Viewing Window

I been wondering... My nesting box has two doors One is a black door and the other one is a transparent window. Thus far I have been keeping the black door on but I have been wondering... Can I take it off so I can see inside or would it stress Bud and stop her from going in there??

HI Michelle, in general the clear door is used if you have a hen that plucks her chicks. While she is laying I would leave the black door on and wait until the chicks are hatched before considering using the clear door. If you used it now she may stop laying (Bud, enough already) or even stop sitting on the eggs if she feels her nestbox is no longer a safe place.

Feathers.

Basically a hen wont use a nest or stay in a nest that she sees as vulnerable. If there is the clear viewing window only...she WILL feel vulnerable. It is designed as a quick viewing window only and the darker window must be used.

Gotcha, so the opaque door will stay right there.

..um... pluck them? She might pluck 'em as in remove the feathers? Why, she likes them naked?

Michelle this is only a rare thing; hopefully you wont have that problem. Some people think its because they have a deficient diet, others think it’s a nervous disorder. Mostly once a hen or cock starts feather plucking it’s very hard to stop, if it happens wait till the baby is getting old ready to leave the nest & can keep it’s self warm, then remove it from the nest to the floor of the cage, where the parents can still feed it, mostly then they will stop.
