Posted June 2, 200718 yr I realise that you can put a cage budgie into an aviary but can it go the other way round ? Or will aviary kept birds get too stressed ? My local animal torturers sell their budgies as tamed for $80 - $100 depending on colour and aviary budgies at $15 - $60 but say that you can't put an aviary budgie into a cage as it will stress and die. Does this have any basis in fact or is it a money making ploy ?
June 2, 200718 yr If that were true...then every budgie taken from the aviary and put into a breeder cage would stress and die. There may be a grain of truth in the stress factor, as a bird that has had plenty of flying space, who suddenly is put into a "too small" cage might well get stressed trying to do a "jail break"...and stressed budgies CAN get sick and die. BUT I would not say that their statement is true in 90% of cases.
June 2, 200718 yr I agree with Kaz,If that was the case, some of the young budgies, are out in the flights for 10 months, before being caught up to come in to be prepared for showing.I havent seen 1 get stressed yet, they may get a bit spooked for a day or to,but no problems,I think budgies are the easyest of birds,to settle in small cages. June 2, 200718 yr Author That was pretty much what I thought. Nice to get confirmation though. Not exactly a pet store that I would take seriously but I figured better to check.
July 11, 200717 yr I did that with Emmett. I bought him from a petstore that had their budgies in huge aviaries and then brought him home and put him in a small quarantine cage. He was fine. He was in their for 6 weeks too. Now he is in the big cage and he is doing well. In fact most pet-shops in New Zealand keep their budgies in aviaries when they are for sale. So all my budgies I bought were originally in large flight cages or aviaries and then put into small quarantine cages and then later moved to the main cage and none have ever had problems. Just a side note: We have a petshop that sells budgies "only as aviary budgies" you are not allowed to keep them in a cage. Weird. They are always the big english ones though. I don't agree with that. I have just never bought one cause I didn't want the petshop people to go off at me for buying one to stick in a cage. Although I almost bought a lovely violet clearflight pied english last year, but didn't because I was moving soon after and was in the middle of breeding my budgies.
