i know dumb question: Do you remove the shell once the egg hatches? Does the hen throw it out or should I go in the nest and remove it?

 

There is no such thing as a dumb question I say remove it. WHY ? Some eggshells tend to envelope themselves around an unhatched egg, like a second layer and then the chick in that egg cannot get out. True. I have seen it many times.

Woah. Sorta like some assimilation out of scifi movies?

Most hens shift it over by the doorway. Some dont. Some eat the eggshell. Best to remove it to prevent a new hatchling being unable to get out.
