Posted May 27, 200717 yr I know lots of plants are bad for our birdies, but I was wondering... Is the Aloe Vera one of them? Pat um... Has keen interest into that one. I know he already ate a chunk of it before. I'm always trying to keep him away from the couple plants we have but one minute he's on the playgym, I turn around, and when I look back 10 seconds later he's chewing that aloe! (the other plant we have is named... Dieffenbachia. I know it's very bad for him. I'm working very hard on convincing my mom to get rid of it. It's so ugly anyway. Seriously. Ugliest, unhealthiest plant ever.)
May 27, 200717 yr Hi Michelle. I just did a search on the web, which is a good idea if you want to find out about just about anything…I found out that a common name for that plant is “Dumb Cane” which I thought straight away didn’t sound good…. Look at this site it says it’s extremely poisonous to young children…so I wouldn’t let your bird near it if I were you. http://www.valentine.gr/dieffenbachia_en.htm Edited May 27, 200717 yr by Kaz
May 28, 200717 yr Hi Michelle, we have one exhibition breeder who is using a lot of aloe with his birds after finding out it was really good for them, for a variety of reasons. This is a FAQ on our site about it: http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/faqs/i...=141&artlang=en Feathers.
May 29, 200717 yr Author I'm trying my best to keep the birds away from it, norm. Frankly, I'd throw it outside. It's not only dangerous, it's UGLY and it looks awfully sick. That doesn't help much for the looks of a living room. And really... Aloe Vera's good for their health? Well, looks like I don't have to worry at all. No scientific evidence towards the benefits but I at least know it won't harm my bird. Edited May 29, 200717 yr by Michelle

That sounds like a win, win to me. Just toss the other and replace with the new one!!! Just a suggestion.
May 29, 200717 yr Author Quite frankly I'd rather just see the plant go than replace it with a new other species. We have awful luck with plants, so it's best to just not have any more!

June 1, 200717 yr Oh she would. It's a big thing. That diefenbachia is absolutely poisonous to budgies. One of my friends lost a bird due to that plant. But it shouldn't be ugly, it can be quite decorative if healthy and many people would like to have it in their room. So cut the stem in parts if it is too big, place each piece in some water and give it away to those who have no birds (work in gloves!) I too have it, but keep it in the kitchen, away from the birds. I am thinking of getting rid of it anyway, as well as of euphorbia which is also very dangerous. As to aloe - it does have some thorns, doesn't it? I have it in the balcony, and am afraid to let the birds near it too.
June 1, 200717 yr Wikipedia - Explanation - Dieffenbachia I have a couple of them and yes they are not ugly in my opinion. My birds stay away from my plants so I don't have issues. But if your birds are free flying all the time or curious I would suggest a room that they are not in or out of the house. Poinsetta's are toxic not only to birds but cats too so I never brings them in.
June 7, 200717 yr Author Sorry for the late bump, I sorta forgot about this thread... It's a pretty and very popular plant, but ours is absolutely UGLY! It just has like 4-5 leaves at the top of it's looong shaft. We never managed to make it keep the lower leaves. My mom agreed to get rid of it a few days ago (She agreed it's uglyyy), but I'm wondering why she's waiting so long. Nevertheless I'm making sure it goes away by the weekend. And our aloe has tiny thorns but they are not hurting. Pat likes climbing on it and ripping them off. I take him off there whenever I catch him though, don't want him to destroy it. It's a gift I gave to my mom
