I want to mark my eggs to make sure I know which is which, but I'm not sure what kind of pen I should use. I know you can't use oil based markers and such, but I been wondering, does a normal lead pencil work or can it be bad for the egg?

I haven't used a pencil as yet it might work but you need to be very gentle as the eggs are fragile, i use a fine water proof base pen that I bought and it is perfect for the job. It is very fine but has a soft tip. But any water proof non toxic pen would be fine. you need one that doesn't smell. But try your pencil I know a breeder that uses black lead pencils. I hope this helps

Regular lead pencil? Well that's what I was wondering. So these aren't harmful?

Lead pencils are fine, Michelle. I used a 2b I think on some of mine.

That said, #2 is... well, I have no idea if I marked them right. I have to keep in mind that #1 might be #2 and #2 might be #1. Eeps.

2B would be a good pencil to use, you want a soft one but not one that is too soft to be smudged. I wouldn't use HB and maybe not even 2H. These are the harder pencils (which means you have to press harder to get it to show up)

 

That said I use a non-toxic water based pen. I found a pack of ten or maybe 12 in woolis (shop here in aus) for under a $1. Although it was on a special.

Well I used a HB, but I didn,t even have to apply pressure. You just slide it across the surface and it marks. Palely, but it does.

Excellent :sad: You'll know if they were the wrong way around if #1 hatches after #2.

Well there I learnt something new :sad: Now we have to wait for them to hatch.

I use a permanent water based soft point pen.You could break the egg with a pencil& it might wear off.

eather one will do.I use pen type.A diff colour for each day.That way I just put amark on the egg & I know what day in the week it was layed.

Well I would've used markers too but I just have smelly ones. And the highlighters I have... I have no idea if they're water based!

 

So... pencil it was. Let's hope it'll stay there long enough!

Really they are the same thing. In Australia markers are just called pens.

SUPER and SUPER!!!! Congrats on egg #3. You should be able to take a peek tomorrow and see if there is any veining in the first egg. Look close, it can be hard to see. GOOD LUCK!!

 

Actually kinda cool that we can do this at almost the same time. Helps with the ...NOW WHAT's......(Laughing out loud) There are several others currently with eggs and chicks as well.

I dont mark eggs, I never have. I put a little sticker on the outside of the nesting box for each egg laid and I date the sticker. At some point I candle the eggs with a flexi torch and I discard the clear ones. Then I just wait.

Yes, Elly. The flexi torch helps with that too....you can bend it to shape and candle the eggs in situ. The only time I ever touch eggs is to move them to be fostered if need be.
