Posted May 26, 200717 yr I want to mark my eggs to make sure I know which is which, but I'm not sure what kind of pen I should use. I know you can't use oil based markers and such, but I been wondering, does a normal lead pencil work or can it be bad for the egg?
May 26, 200717 yr I haven't used a pencil as yet it might work but you need to be very gentle as the eggs are fragile, i use a fine water proof base pen that I bought and it is perfect for the job. It is very fine but has a soft tip. But any water proof non toxic pen would be fine. you need one that doesn't smell. But try your pencil I know a breeder that uses black lead pencils. I hope this helps Edited May 27, 200717 yr by splat
May 26, 200717 yr Author Regular lead pencil? Well that's what I was wondering. So these aren't harmful?
May 26, 200717 yr Lead pencils are fine, Michelle. I used a 2b I think on some of mine. Â Â Feathers.
May 26, 200717 yr Author Well I just marked them. Yea, them. #2 is in! Heehee, that happened while I was outside doing yardwork apparently. Â ...I hope I didn't do anything wrong. As I took one to mark it, my hand started shaking. I hope I didn't scramble them... But I don't think that was enough. Â That said, #2 is... well, I have no idea if I marked them right. I have to keep in mind that #1 might be #2 and #2 might be #1. Eeps. Edited May 26, 200717 yr by Michelle
May 26, 200717 yr 2B would be a good pencil to use, you want a soft one but not one that is too soft to be smudged. I wouldn't use HB and maybe not even 2H. These are the harder pencils (which means you have to press harder to get it to show up) Â That said I use a non-toxic water based pen. I found a pack of ten or maybe 12 in woolis (shop here in aus) for under a $1. Although it was on a special.
May 26, 200717 yr Author Well I used a HB, but I didn,t even have to apply pressure. You just slide it across the surface and it marks. Palely, but it does.
May 27, 200717 yr Excellent  You'll know if they were the wrong way around if #1 hatches after #2. Â Â Feathers.
May 27, 200717 yr I use a permanent water based soft point pen.You could break the egg with a pencil& it might wear off.
May 27, 200717 yr non toxic waterbased pen or marker?? Some said marker some pen, Which ones better? Edited May 27, 200717 yr by Marlony
May 27, 200717 yr eather one will do.I use pen type.A diff colour for each day. That way I just put amark on the egg & I know what day in the week it was layed.
May 27, 200717 yr Author Well I would've used markers too but I just have smelly ones. And the highlighters I have... I have no idea if they're water based! Â So... pencil it was. Let's hope it'll stay there long enough!
May 27, 200717 yr pen or marker  Really they are the same thing. In Australia markers are just called pens. Edited May 27, 200717 yr by Nerwen
May 28, 200717 yr Author Well, when I think of a PEN I think of something with a much finer tip than a marker...

May 29, 200717 yr Hey there Keets. I just decided to come here under my real name. I already love it. It's a friendly place. Thanks for showing it to me!  And oh yea! Egg #3 has been laid! Going for 4?? MAYBE! We'll see!  SUPER and SUPER!!!! Congrats on egg #3. You should be able to take a peek tomorrow and see if there is any veining in the first egg. Look close, it can be hard to see. GOOD LUCK!!  Actually kinda cool that we can do this at almost the same time. Helps with the ...NOW WHAT's......(Laughing out loud) There are several others currently with eggs and chicks as well.  P.S. I like this name better ;-)
May 29, 200717 yr I dont mark eggs, I never have. I put a little sticker on the outside of the nesting box for each egg laid and I date the sticker. At some point I candle the eggs with a flexi torch and I discard the clear ones. Then I just wait.
May 29, 200717 yr oh I like that idea Kaz therefore you don't have to touch them Yes, Elly. The flexi torch helps with that too....you can bend it to shape and candle the eggs in situ. The only time I ever touch eggs is to move them to be fostered if need be.
May 29, 200717 yr That is excellent, I know one thing if I ever decided to breed I would be so filled with knowledge from these boards ...thank you for sharing.
