June 28, 200717 yr Author I took Sara to the vet couple a days ago, she didn't find any problem with her foot or leg, also she tested her feces and there was no bacteria but she found an ingrown feather on her wing joint and she thinks this is why she is unable to fly, she tested her organs she couldn't feel any enlargement or any fluid. the vet tried to pull the ingrown feather but it was such a hard job because it was in a tight place, but she pulled as much as she could. she gave her some antibiotics in case she has some internal problem. because sara never had an ingrown feather and all of these problems happening at once the vet thinks that there is cancer and it is spreading, it is very sad, she said what ever the problem was we can't do anything about it. Sara's poo is runny with lots of liquids around it, she doesn't want to play or come out of the cage as much, may be she is still upset from the vet visit because the procedure of taking out the feather really annoyed her, also she doesn't like the medicine which she is taking twice a day. I am really sad and I hope she will get better.
June 29, 200717 yr Sorry that Sara isn't doing so well again, she appears to be going down the same path as my beloved Rosey (Rosey Bourke), with all the fluid filled tumors and such. We filled her full of antibiotics several times which didn't help, aspirated the fluid several times which didn't help. I really hope Sara can beat this, you and her have tried so very, very hard. You guys are my heroes, and make a dent in the queue of heartless people that don't/won't do anything and choose to abandon their birds or dispose of them. Take care! :ygbudgie:
July 1, 200717 yr Author Please help! This morning while sara was on my husband's hand, preening herself he felt something wet, when he looked it was blood, yes and a lot of it, she picked on her scab and started bleeding, first of all I applied pressure on the sore for a minute or so the I cleaned it with iodine solution and kept a clean cotton pad until the blood stopped, she lost a considerable amount of blood may be about 5-6 drops. after that Sara was tired and lethargic may be because of the blood she lost or may be because she was restrain for few minute to stop the bleeding, anyhow I gave her some sugar and kept her warm, after two hours she was back to her self and started to cleaning and preening again, I kept watching her because she insisted on removing this scab. in the afternoon she scratched her sore again and we had the same scenario but this time with tinny bit of blood, Now it is night time and I put her to sleep but I put the cover in a way I can peep and see her what she is doing, I am afraid I am disturbing her sleep because whenever I do I can see her beautiful eyes looking at me no matter how quite I was, but the same time I don't want her to bleed to death while I am not noticing. is there any thing I can do to stop her scratching and what do you give the bird to replace the lost blood. I'll speak with vet tomorrow morning even though I don't have any hope that it is going to help. So please advise me if there is anything I can do until then Edited July 1, 200717 yr by ORCA
July 1, 200717 yr From our FAQ section: If bleeding is occurring from the skin: Minimize the birds movement Carefully pluck feathers from the area of injury Clean wound with warm water or 1% hydrogen peroxide Apply antibiotic powder If stitches are required to close the wound, see your avian veterinarian Apply digital pressure to the site of bleeding for approximately 1 minute. the whole article Bleeding Budgie BBC FAQ As to replace blood loss there is nothing you can do and those few drops are probably what made her so tired plus the struggle. I would keep her warm, continue to give her the sugar water as you did for energy, keep her quiet as possible even if she looks recovered. Too keep her from picking at it you may want to think of a collar and there is spray that stops feather picking but I don't think you would want to put that on her lump. She sees herself as cleaning the area so this is a tough situation. You may want to PM phoebe and see if she has advice on this since she has been there with her rosey.
July 1, 200717 yr Poor Sara, all I could suggest is that ORCA fashion a collar for her which she will hate but she has to go to the vet for sure. :ausb:
July 2, 200717 yr Author I am very sad and very angry, When ever I try to contact the vet, they take a message and they are suppose to get back to me, most of the time they don't until I ring again, but this time when I spoke to the reception lady, she asked me what is that about and I explained the situation, she said the vet can't do anything about it and you should bring her in, I asked to speak to the vet because whenever I take sara she gets stressed, it is half an hour driving there and I just wanted to know if the vet can do anything for her, if not I am not going to stress her more. the reception lady got back to me and said that she spoke to the vet and the vet said the same thing, we have to bring her in. I am not sure why they treat us this way, they are not doing this for us for free, last week's visit she charged $140 and I guarantee you that we are cutting expenses in our household to afford the vet bills. I go to that avian vet because I feel that normal vet don't know much about birds, once I took Sara when she was about two to a vet and she was not able to fly well and she was breathing heavily, the vet said she is going to lay an egg of course that egg didn't come until now, the same vet once I asked her how do you know a budgie if it is male or female, she said you feel their vent, if is is inward it is female if it is sticking out it is male, I'm not sure about this method either. anyhow, I don't feel I can take Sara to that avian vet again, but may be I'll do for Sara's Sake.
July 2, 200717 yr They should charge you FOLLOWUP fees, NOT CONSULTATION fees as this has been an ongoing problem with Sara and TELL them that!! That is only courtesy! If it was a NEW problem, fine, but they shouldn't charge you full price for the same problem! And furthermore, read them the riot act and say how can you recommend them to your friends and potential customers when they are overcharging like this!!! Hope something can be done for Sara, good luck! :ygbudgie:
July 2, 200717 yr Author If without arguing about the charge we've been ignored, how is it going to be if I do. I think they do that because first they are the only avian vets in the area, and secondly the are busy enough and last of all I think they gave up on Sara long time ago, and may be they think it is waste of their time, I don't know. but the least charge they did was $50 when I came back the same week. they have average charge of about $110 , they have consultation A or B or C depending on whether it is at a closer date or not,but last time because she did feces test this is why it jumped to $140. and always she says it is diffrent problem. July 2, 200717 yr Oh dear, you are caught between a rock and a hard place and I would imagine another avian vet is too far to go to?
July 2, 200717 yr The problem you have had with this budgie, is sad.but in the light of the day,she is 7 yrs old.& has had a good life,Just let her go to budgie heaven,Lets face it you are being crual to it.No flames I wear a flame proof suit. But have a soft heart for sick budgies. This has gone on for 5 pages.let the poor thing go to its resting place.
July 2, 200717 yr ORCA, there comes a point where you have to cut your losses. I can see you love your little budgie, but if your family is having to go without to pay exorbitant vet fees for a vet that sounds like she's no good anyway, you need to reassess your priorities. Make Sara as comfortable as possible and avoid anything that might stress her. Make sure she has plenty of fluids to help her replace the blood loss, and let her sleep when she needs it. Sleep can be the best medicine. Keep her comfortable, quiet, well fed on her normal diet if she'll eat and let nature take it's course. Sincerely, KathyW.
July 2, 200717 yr Author after 7 years -as you mentioned macka- I know what this budgie wants from the look in her eyes, and even though deep in my heart I don't want to let go ever, but I can assure you if I feel that she gave up on herself I will not hesitate to help her to go through her final moments and to be as peaceful as possible.

July 7, 200717 yr Author hi my name is amanda.and my buggie looks like it has a lump on its bum, my bird is picking the feathers around it and it seems like it is irratating her. when she poops it expands and i seems infected. she picks at it. i changed her food, do you think it could be that? i just noticed this happening today. i am vey worried so if u can please let me know anythink i can do about it or any sites i whould check out thank you very much. Welcome to the forum Amanda, I'm sorry for your bird, I don't know what sort of lump she has, and its better to check with the vet ASAP, but it sound like something else, because Sara's lump wasn't itching her and she wasn't scratching or picking on it until it started bleeding, then she started cleaning it, the lump itself wasn't bothering her even though the size was massive. I think Sara has many internal problems and the lump was one of the symptoms. I hope your bird will get over it, but definitely I'll visit the avian vet.
July 7, 200717 yr Are there any vet teaching hospitals round? They should charge less for a consultation than your other vet. I would get a second opinion if I was you. I'm lucky in that I have a veterinary teaching hospital 10 minutes away with 2 avian vets, with the best equipment available and I get my consultations free, because I am a vet student. So if there is a teaching unit close by, go there. Poor Sara, she sounds like an absolute wonder. I was thinking, when the lump was big, did she still stand on that leg? Cause if that leg was sore then she would overcompensate and put all her weight on her other leg making that one sore too. In regards to the flight issue, this could be because she hasn't flown in a while and her muscle may be weak. I have some pudgie budgies who are finding it a bit hard to fly, just because they are fat. (I also have skinny budgies too, these ones just eat more than they should!). So hopefully that would be the issue, but like my vet said (and I consider him a really good vet) when he was x-raying my 5 year old budgie "5 years is considered very old for a budgie" and he knows they live longer in the wild, because I queried that. So your little 7 year old is doing quite well. Just give her lots of hugs and cuddles, and keep doing what you are doing, you are an excellent mum. :glare:
July 7, 200717 yr :glare: How IS Sara doing Orca. And welcome Amanda, please take your budgie to the vet as there can be all sorts of lumps. :ygbudgie:
July 8, 200717 yr Author Sara is still with us, her health is not good, she is weak and frail, her poo has huge amount of water and she drinks a lot. she can't go up and down the perch easily but she has her way for asking for what she wants, she has few perches in her cage at different levels but she insists on sitting on the highest one, she eats and drinks well (often I had to bring the food next to her and I offer her water regularly). her wing has a big bruise-like lump, which looks like it is filled with blood (She had this lump when we went to the vet the last time next to where the vet tried to pull the ingrown feather, but now it's getting bigger and I think whenever she tries to fly this lump grows). her legs are weak and her weight dropped from 64g when she had the big lump to 43g now. her original lump which I posted lots of photos about nearly disappeared. she asks to go out when we have our dinner and she gets really excited and start wonder from one plate to the other but sometimes she just asks to go out for a kiss and cuddle or just to stay close to us and when she does she just sit and sleep on my hand. I have the heater or the desk lamp on to keep her warm. We had that big debate in my family whether its better for her at this stage to consider putting her to rest because as we all see her quality of life is not that great but every one was against this idea, and I had this big drama, the kids crying and my husband just saying the trip is stressful enough and he doesn't think that the vet will be gentle and kind with her, and then it is going to be too late to change anything. and about me, in my heart even though I was suggesting this thing but I was wishing for this reaction, may be some will call me cruel or I am not thinking about what is best for Sara but when I see her at her good moments or when she gets happy just because I passed next to her cage, and remember how many thing she overcame, I feel she is still fighting and I will fight with her. when I took her to the vet about few months ago with the first lump problem, the vet then talked with me about putting her to sleep because she though she is not going to make for few days. and here she is, and who knows may be next time I'll post an update it will be about her getting better and kicking this off, or may be not. but for now I want to enjoy every hour she is with us.
July 8, 200717 yr I hope she gets better for your and our sakes, she sounds like a real sweetheart. And if she is still having happy moments then I would think that she is still fighting this. Best wishes from me and the gang.
