June 23, 200718 yr yes watching is the key. How old is the one you removed? As to colour I would think you have a mauve http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....showtopic=12631 standards for blues http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....showtopic=12640 standards for grey and greygreen. I would love to see a shot of the one with the clear wings when fully feathered!
June 23, 200718 yr Author thanks Norm. The little one looks alright this morning. I am going to give it a few days inside where it is a little warmer to master some of the finer points of adult life. It has seed, some millet, water of course, and today it will be intriduced to vegetables. It has had all these before, but not sure if it has fed itself. We will see how it goes. I appreciate the feedback and the info. This $ the oldest from this nest, and was born on May 20, so it is a bit over a month old. It flies well, has spent some time out o fnest box previosuly and is amturing up well. Edited June 23, 200718 yr by dmcminn
June 23, 200718 yr Author So you seed and assorted veges should be fine? No need to egg and biscuit? When i look at thsoe colour standard, I say she is a golden face mauve. She has dark blue/navy cheek patches. Interesting thing is that that her dad has white/very light grey cheeck patches. I think he is definitely a gey green, with a dark factor gene, where she is mauve. Though i am not sure how you get a mauve bir from a green parent, unless of course he is grey green, split to blue. then i suppose it is possible Edited June 23, 200718 yr by dmcminn
June 23, 200718 yr The millet it the best they seen to be able learn to eat that first. Offer anything you thing will be tried I use to sprinkle some egg and biscuit on the veggies.
June 24, 200718 yr Author Well, the solo little one has some seed, 2 water sources, a mirror to help her think she is not alone, some millet, some spinach and there is some egg and biscuit on the spinach and on the seed. She does not appear to be hungry and she appears to have a lot of energy. That is good. I will still be keeping a special eye on her.
June 26, 200718 yr Author okay, It has been 3 days now since I seperated the little one, and she is going well. She has eaten some seed, though she does not appear too big on greens just yet. I am happy with how she is going. Here are some pics of what she looks like now. She likes to go into an attached nest box when she is scared, and she loves to sqwark, but she seems well. I am pretty sure she is a she, but any thoughts on that would be appreciated. I am thinking of names, and since she is on her own, and has been doing well, I am thinking a good name for her would be Independance. Thoughts?
June 26, 200718 yr Author Grace is Latin meaning Goodwill. I am not sure that is her. I think i will stick with Independence as it seems to suit her, and i will call her Pen or Penni for short. Not sure about the other 2. they are still in the nest box, they do not even venture out. Mum seems happy to have them in there with her. hate how she is playing favourites!!!
June 26, 200718 yr Dave, I love the name Independence and I am pleased that she is doing so well. Feathers.
June 26, 200718 yr Looking good Dave, I have noticed some young go onto the greens straight away & I like to give it to them, just in case they are slow at finding the water. But then others don’t it’s like everything, each have different characters; I think your pretty safe, if she is a screecher, that it is a hen. I don’t think Mum is playing favourites, your name seems appropriate, she is just Independent, I think it’s mostly the young that choose when to leave & some are very hesitant & if they are getting plenty to eat the will just stay put. I don’t know if it’s true, but I have a theory that they start to hold off a bit on feeding, which encourages the young to leave eventually.
June 27, 200718 yr Author Little Independence is doing well so far. She is getting in and eating seed, although she will get more spinach on the weekend, but so far, she has yet to partake in it. As for the other 2 in Angel's nestbox, I find it strange that she has not kicked them out. Perhaps it is more Dad that thinks they should not be in there as Mum has layed more eggs, but Dad thinks that they are old enough to be out on their own. The two others do not venture out, but stay with Mum and the 4 eggs inside. I check on them to make sure they are fine and feeding well, and all appears good. All the sqwarkers are form one nest box, so three little girls. Another nest box has all boys, as in three males. The last nest box looks to have both bosy and girls. Funny how that works out.
June 28, 200718 yr Author Things were going well until Ozzy escaped - flying out the garage door off ino the big blue. i am actually quite depressed about it. Sad day for me, and for his family. I pray he will come back, but I am not hopeful. I will seperate Angel from her eggs over the weekend. i was thinkig of doing it anyway, however without a father to feed the young, no choice really.
June 28, 200718 yr Dave ...you need a story to give you hope I lost a 4 week old newly fledged baby once and got her back. This is her story http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....ic=8470&hl=kaya PS I still have her.
June 28, 200718 yr As I said in the other post, Dave, leave te garage door open and a cage next to his wife with food, in the hopes he comes back to her.
June 29, 200717 yr Author Hard to do when i am not there, but when I am, it is open. Scared of cats coming it, but hopefully dogs behind the fence will scare them off
June 30, 200717 yr Author i am very interested to see what you all say about the youngest one. you would think that she is a spangle, with really light wing markings, but when you looks at her, she has hardly any olive green on her body, except for on her rump, where she is olive green. i would swear that if i knew no better, i woudl say she is a olive green pied, but she came from a olive green spangle father and an ino mother. I will get a photo so you can see what I am talking about.
June 30, 200717 yr Author As requested, new pics. Here you can see that she has the faintest lines on her head, and she is almost like a creamino, but look at the patches near her legs or dark olive green and the patch on her rump. Now I know that ino's can mask things, but could she mask pied? Could Dad have had pied in him? Thoughts? Also the other two from this nest Independence and ________ (still looking for a name - something after her father Ozzy who flew away)
June 30, 200717 yr Ralia ?? It's not really a name Just the last bit of Australia (Ozzy makes me think of Aussie) OR Kelly - the daughter of Ozzy Osborne Ino can mask the pied gene - she could be recessive. With very few markings and NONE on the wings it's hard to say if she is a dominant or recessive. You will know for sure later when she does or doesn't get an iris ring. I agree with you in thinking you have a pied and both are possible from this pairing. (Mum is dominant bing masked by the ino gene or both parents are split recessive)
June 30, 200717 yr Author Well, talk about throwing a curve ball into the mix. So far this pair of what was thought to be a grey-green spangle and an albino have produced Independence - a yellow faced mauve Tralia - a green/mauve spangle - not sure on her colour, but not grey green, mauve/green seems the most likely ________ - a pied. Is it possible that the two youngest are diluted? There colours seem to be "washed out" somewhat. Interesting to see what the remaining eggs bring. Shame they can never breed again due to Ozzy's escape, but his progeny live on
June 30, 200717 yr Isn't it fun when you get a surprise. Thank for taking the suggested name (and playing with it) I know what you mean with the colour, she kinda looks like Connie, one of the first birds I breed at that age. I think she is another yellowface and possible grey? Edited June 30, 200717 yr by Nerwen
July 1, 200717 yr Author Nerwen, thanks for the name help. the littlest one is a surprise. She still sleeps in there with her mother, who has 5 eggs to sit on. Angel was out showing the little on (I need another name here - (Laughing out loud)) how to eat and drink today. it was good to see Angel out getting some food
July 1, 200717 yr Author okay, so i named the little one Kau'i - pronounce Ka OO ee It is a polynesian name that means the beauty, the youthfulness - kind of suits her So we have Independence, Tralia and Kau'i. three young ladies
