Posted April 27, 200718 yr I asked about it in some post here, but I can't find it :ausb: We are going to build an aviary. We have lots of space in the new house, so we could build a huge aviary, but I remember reading a post here, that budgies can fly too fast in a big space and then they can hit the site and kill themself. So I'm wondering how to build it. Maybe if the aviary has L shape, they will have to slow down to fly in the corner :oliveb: Any suggestions would be appreciated

April 27, 200718 yr Author Thank you Kaz, I was looking fot it for ages I was gonna ask you how did you find it, but I just realized there is a seach button, silly me Thanks for the answer in the first post, I think we will make the aviary about 4-5 m long the most, we'll see. I can always devide it in half.
April 27, 200718 yr Or instead of using wire mesh you could use a sort of flexible, plasticy nylon like mesh, that bounces when the budgies hit it, so they don't get hurt. They use it in the huge avairies in our zoo.
April 27, 200718 yr Author I know what you mean, I'll see if I can find this kind of mesh somewhere. That's a good idea
April 27, 200718 yr I have some of that plastic mesh in one of my aviaires and would not use it again. It breaks down and falls to pieces after time. Does not stand up to extremes of temperature and becomes brittle and breaks apart. Maybe Zoos can afford to keep replacing it or pay for the very best which might be out of our reach, I don't know .... Edited April 27, 200718 yr by Kaz

The plastic mesh is not good, I have some on my balcony and it melts down in the sun. I've seen nylony kind of mesh. I can't explain it, but it's not plastic. Or I'll use something like "the bamboo rolling curtains" to separate the space. Or maybe a big pot tree (hedge) in the middle or on sides, so they can't hit the sides?
April 27, 200718 yr The stuff the zoos use is nylony. I think. Anyway, they stuff at our zoo is quite old, as it has lichen and stuff growing on it and it has stood up well to the weather.
April 27, 200718 yr Budgies can still hurt themselves on nets, the aviary were I work is made of net and when we get the occasional Hawk chasing the birds we do get the odd broken neck. Unfortunately there is nothing we can do about the hawks, or the birds flying away from them! You could try covering the ends of aviary in shade cloth on the outside so the budgies can't see through them and brake in time.
April 27, 200718 yr what about glass aviarys?? they must kill birds since its glass or hard plastic and they can sometimes not even see the glass... i see them sometimes in petshops. Edited April 27, 200718 yr by Marlony
