Just Bought My First Big Aviary

Featured Replies

Hey All..

I am stoked I just bought my very OWN first Aviary.

Av.jpg

But it is seconded hand so I know that smart thing to do is clean it But with what? I don't want to kill or sicken my budgies. I am also going to have a cement / Villa board base to clean easily. Or is there something that I should have

Measures - 1.6 meters long, 1.9 meters high 0.9 meters wide How man birds can I happily fit

I JUST LOVE THEM :fear :wub: :fear :fear :D

Hey great aviary,,,looks good.

Just wash it with disinfectant or vinegar diluted with water and then hose it out.

Where are you putting it?

I advised perches of all shapes and sizes (natural perches are wonderful). You have a lot of room for different enrichement toys and such..

HI Neat,

love the new aviary. I just recently got one as well. I found that diluted vinegar a brush a and broom to clean down the walls and wire worked wonders.. came up like new.

Have fun fitting it out, I know I did.

Feathers.

It might be a good idea to fit a screen over the door to act as a double door and prevent budgies from escaping. You know like those dangly screen things they hang in doorways in dairies.

The number of birds depends on the perching. current allowance is for 160mm per bird.

But you also have to take in the feeding and watering arrangements. Over crowding causes stress which leads to sickness.

At 900mm wide if you put in two perches at each end. that is 4 perches at 900mm each. that is 3.6m, each bird will want 160mm to themselves that is space for 22 birds. "MAX". As you don't have the floor space to have feeding for that many birds at one time. I would limit it to 12 birds.

My junior flight is 2.2m x 1m and is 2.2m high. I currently have 22 birds in it and to see it. They have plenty of space.

Using the rules above. I could have 39 birds.

Hey they are mad Ideas... I am working on steeling hubbies work shop ( lawn mower shed ) for me hehehe...

I only use sticks and branches in my cages and I was doing the same for the avairy.. I was told by a friend to hang a heshen bag on the inside of the door to stop and run aways which i am happy that someone else mentioned it ....

My problem is the positioning of feed and water dishes I am not sure for the nesting boxes as colony breeding ekks me .... BUt what i have noticed is that in the cages ( 1.2m x 55cm) they love the highest branch... So i really don't want to rush anything and regret it later...

I will start with the full clean... SHould I lice spray the avairy too as it was second hand

I have my eyes on a few toys... My budgies love their swings (Laughing out loud).... so i thought of the parrots ladder i can hang one end up and the other end up so it is like a bridge and they can climb and peck at it ( natural wood and cotton stuff ) ....

ANy Ideas about food containers I know there is the stainless steel ones that hang on the door... I thought about a suspended bird feeder is this okay??? or my bird bath on a stand don't know of that would fit though.. My head is pumping full of ideas.... I CAN'T WAIT ......

guess you can tell i haven't had one before (Laughing out loud)

Hiya Neat,

Natural sticks, branches etc are always a great idea. Lice spraying the cage is great if you are at all concerned about it, it can't hurt.

As for feeding dishes, I use the suspended types in my aviary. I find that it solves any problems with the seed being soiled. I have also put a container over the top of the seed dispenser to stop the budgies from going in to play and getting suffocated.

I am also a great believer of toys. Why should aviary birds miss out on the fun their inside cousins get out of toys. You can use all sorts of things.. I got a lot of stuff for my aviary from $2 shops (skippings ropes, dog toys etc). Most of their toys are at the front so that from one side to the other is clear for exercise from flying. The parrot ladder idea is great as a few birds at once can play on it. This is a small part of the aviary, full of toys - they love it.

Cool... Wow your looks unreal.... Dave ( Hubby ) Put the aviary up on the deck last night and fasten timber floor so that nothing could get in or out of there. ( Will post picture of step by step :D )... The $2 Shop is awesome I will end up going wild in there yhanks for the heads up I would of gone to those Expensive places :) ...

Since I am looking at ( Box ) breeding is the aviary basically a flight cage???? and Time to mingle

I have the same feeders too, they work well.

Yes if your not planning on colony breeding (I don't like it either) then this is a flight cage.

yep, that's it. A place for all of your "stock birds".

Was fantastic.. even my perches came from a discount shop, they were made from bamboo lattice. My 14 year old daughter was with me when we were buying stuff and it was her that spotted some of the brilliant gear and had the brainwaves!

Another place that has a lot of stuff much cheaper than pet shops is here: http://www.thepaintedparrot.com.au/shop/ (new address for anyone that has The Painted Parrot bookmarked.

Hiya Neat, no, not all branches can be used. I'm not sure if it has been posted in this forum yet but there is a fairly extensive list here:
