Posted March 30, 200718 yr A lot of you probably knew this about budgies, but I didnt until I took my little Chico to the vets .... I took him cause he had loose stools, some were watery and some were almost like constipation, but the watery ones were fewer, so of course it caused me some concern, anyways , the Vet told me that sometimes they can get a watery stools because of excitement, cause they poo and wee at the same time mosty .... but if it was a constant watery poo then it could be a problem, also he is overweight by 6 grams, budgies shouldnt weigh anymore that 40grams and he was 46 grams, apparently Budgies naturally fly about 10 kms a day too look for food and can also survive on very little food, but cause we love our budgies we leave an abundant amount of food for them plus they dont get to fly as much being in cages and limited flight areas, thus putting on weight.. Chico has to go on a diet now cause he has a fatty liver which can lead to other diseases.... the vet said that budgies hide their illnesses quite well ... and makes it hard to detect anything without having to do blood work etc , so keeping their diet to a low fat one is the best to prevent any other complications, the normal budgie Seed we feed our little guys has about 30 grams of fat in it , so now Chico has to go on 2 teaspoons of French White Millet a day only which has 20 grams of fat in it , and veges daily , I am going to make him excercise a little more too by playing a chasing game maybe to get him to fly more ... I have noticed he gets puffed a lot sooner than he probably should... I will do anything to keep my little guy healthy even if it means having to take his seed away for a healthier diet :ausb: Edited March 30, 200718 yr by MissHarley
March 30, 200718 yr I now feed my budgies a canary seed mix as the budgie mix that I was previously buying was just millet!! And that stuff is so fatty.
March 30, 200718 yr Great facts and budgies are so interesting. Did he talk to you about working on coverting part of his diet over to pellets? This is what my avian vet talked to me and why. It will help with the weight reduction too. I do advise if he didn't before you start the weight reduction to buy an electronic gram scale that goes in increments up of 1 g and down 1 g it is important to ensure he doesn't loose too much weight or gain more and that at times is hard to tell unless you pick up him and examine his keel bone.
