March 8, 200718 yr Aw Bea, I'm sorry he is so sick. Hopefully since he seems to have perked up a little, you have caught the re-infection early and he will soon bounce back. I agree you need to treat all the birds that have had contact with him. If your parents don't understand why it is so important let them ask here and we will all be glad to let them know how urgent it is that all the birds are treated. Thinking of you. ((((hugs))))
March 8, 200718 yr Author I'm not sure that Ozzie's eaten much since this morning, maybe he was pretending... He has eaten some food though which is better than none. He's also been playing with his toy and hopping around the place. I weighed him and he's not lost any more weight. More trouble though...Blinkie hasn't eaten much today. Little rat! I'm not convinced he's sick cause he is pacing around his cage like a lunatic and chattering like an idiot. I think he's been doing this ALL day so far. Personally i think he's worried about where his flock mate is and as an alternative wants people so paces when people are in the room. I even hung some millet in there for him and he's ignored it! His poos are small (not eating) but not unusual other than that. His weight has been down to 35g from around his 37g usual weight for a couple of days now (how long Oz has been separated). I phoned the vet and the avian vet isn't in today, grrrrr. I left a message with the receptionist for him to call me tomorrow about treating everybody though. This is so frustrating!
March 8, 200718 yr Bea, it is probably that Blinks is missing Ozzie, but makes me concerned that he should be on meds too, just in case.....
March 8, 200718 yr hugs I can totally see your concern, fingers crossed all is okay on the home front today.
March 8, 200718 yr Author Bea, it is probably that Blinks is missing Ozzie, but makes me concerned that he should be on meds too, just in case..... I want them all on meds but can't contact the vet. It'll have to wait till tomorrow.
March 8, 200718 yr okay. I know you will, so try your hardest not to worry until then. You are doing all you can at this point. No one else could do any more. ((((more hugs)))))
March 9, 200718 yr Author Ozzie's weight is down more. He's now 39g. I'm still waiting for the vet to ring back, if i haven't heard from him in about an hour i'll try again.
March 9, 200718 yr Oh dear, yes keep phoning the vet Bea, poor Ozzie. I am sure he will snap out of it.
March 9, 200718 yr I wish we lived closer I have some of the meds you need here.......too far away PS does Ozzie have loose droppings ? Edited March 9, 200718 yr by Bubbles
March 9, 200718 yr Author PS does Ozzie have loose droppings ? Nope, not at all, they're back to what i would call normal. If it weren't for the weight loss he's behaving pretty normally. I called again, and was told that the vet would be on a break shortly and would ring me back....didn't happen. Too bad if my budgie was on deaths door and they kept me hanging this long - it's not very responsible and really bad service! I'd get a call god knows how many days later saying "returning your call" and i could respond "gee thanks, but the bird i needed help with *insert number of days* ago died! thanks again!" Will try again in the morning. If i can't get through and Oz has lost more weight i'll ring around and hopefully find another vet with bird experience. I'm guessing that the avian vet will be off for the weekend just because i need to talk to him. Blinkie is behaving very normally. I'm a softy and gave him his favourite mirror and filled the little cup on it with seed. He's been eating more as a result....might have to give Ozzie a mirror too, he'd love uninterupted mirror access. Blinkie usually butts in.
March 9, 200718 yr If you can get any vet at all, just tell them you have had a diagnosed case of psittacosis and you need meds for the rest of your flock ....the meds being Doxyvet or Psittavet powder for their water. As your birds have all cohabited it is necessary. If all else fails send me your address and will put some in the mail to you to tide you over till the vet works out a plan.
March 9, 200718 yr Author Do you know if it's safe to use with breeding/baby budgies? I want to treat them but don't want to harm the bubs. I know a vet clinic i can ring if need be for the meds, i don't think those will be hard to get. As everyone is currently healthy and behaving normally that's not my top priority. Ozzie is. If he's losing weight there's a reason, we should be seeing improvement and not further weight loss. As he's pooing normally he's got to be eating or else that wouldn't be possible. So WHY is he losing weight! I really need to speak to the vet who treated him in the first place so that he can decide what steps to take next.
March 9, 200718 yr Good luck Bea. You are the best person to take care of little Ozzie. I wold stick with the one vet for now, as there are often more than one way to treat a disease and usually the situation needs to be taken into account. Different vets treat things slightly differently. Best of luck with your Ozzie pie.
March 9, 200718 yr Author He's not drinking at all - so not getting his meds. Typical budgie! Blinkie's done some strange poos too now so i want him to go get a needle and start treating EVERYONE. I also want to know if there's a way that i can give them the meds directly into their beak rather than sitting around watching them not drink their medicated water. *edit* The vet i need to see isn't working all weekend!!!! I'm crying now because dad just told me "can you not go on these forums, they make you so f****** paranoid" because i said i was trying to figure out if Blink needs to go to the vet. He's not lost more weight but the fact that he's done a few poos like Oz was doing early in the week worries me. Ozzie's weight is hovering between 38g and 39g on the scales. I feel like i'm totally helpless because the vet i need to see to start Blinkie on treatment isn't going to be on till Monday and he's the one who i need to talk to about the best option to medicate the rest of my flock. March 10, 200718 yr Are you able to call the clinic and tell them your situation?? Maybe you could get his home number?
March 10, 200718 yr Author I was speaking to the receptionist, she was very nice. She said that i could see one of their other vets who aren't experts in birds/exotics but that they could copy what Sandy did with Ozzie. I don't want someone inexperienced jabbing a needle around Blinkie though. She said that if either of them get worse to come see one of the other vets and if not it would be best to wait till monday.
March 10, 200718 yr I can't believe the avian vet wouldn't be willing to an ER visit in this instance (I guess I expect too much of people). Bea I hope they are okay hugs out to you sweetie
