Posted February 15, 200718 yr I had my baby hatch on the 12th, the eggs are getting dirty. I know you could wash them but what temperature does the water have to be at? I want to try that bowl thing, put the eggs in a bowl filled with warm water and the ones that stay a float are alive and the dead sink to the bottom. This also washes them off. I have no bedding in the nest box...she kicked it all out so quickly this morning I just put the eggs and chick inside a seed cup and I took a wet rag, wiped the bottom of the box and than put 3 pieces of toilet paper on the bottom. Any suggestions? I don't want this baby splay legged. Should I put some oatmeal in there?
February 16, 200718 yr Here is egg washing advice QUOTE...If, in spite of the fancier's best efforts, some eggs become soiled, attempts should be made to clean them, otherwise germs can get into the eggs from this dirt. Eggs can be cleaned by putting in water at 40 to 42C (the temperature is critical, use a thermometer) then gently wash them with a sponge while using disposable plastic gloves to hold them.UNQUOTE from this site http://www.budgerigars.co.uk/breeding/dos.html You havent said whether or not you have a concave in the base of your nesting box ? ** also I would NOT test your eggs by floating them...that is to check freshness of chook eggs for eating not to be done for possibly viable budgie eggs Edited February 16, 200718 yr by Bubbles
February 16, 200718 yr Yes and in chook eggs the good ones sink. So don't try that way. Just candle and hope for the best.
February 16, 200718 yr Author Well all of them are fertile...the other chick hatched a few hours ago and is well fed. I do have a concave circle...I think I made it a little to small. I built the nest box and I only made the concave about 4 inches round. I didn't think they were going to have 9 eggs! (Laughing out loud)
February 16, 200718 yr If you have some wood shaving already that the hen had removed before, add in a little bit each day now and she should leave it along. Mostly they clean the nest making it their own (this is when all the bedding is removed) but once babies appear they are willing to leave it be. Although I think sailorwolf's mum wasn't happy to see it's return and took it out again.
