Hi Im New Here And Have A Question Too

Hello to all I'm Daniel and I'm from CC,NSW,AU,anyway I have a question about my budgies, for your information they're in my signature image, so the question is about chidori-kun and skye they're very attached to each other and have been for a very long time well 15 months just about i separated them from the 2 other boys since skye is a hen normal crusty brown i presume and chidori-kun is a lutino cock with a pink beak, we caught them doing it a few times so it's confirmed anyway the breeding couple are in a seperate cage which is alot bigger than bluee's and picollo's cage,so getting to the main point of this question skye has laid 3 eggs so far,now it's six the first was laid exactly 10 days ago and the new one was laid yesterday ''3rd'' I want to know how many more eggs I should expect their to come and the chances that they're all fertile,By The Way both cages have plenty of seed, water, cuttlebone's,and i give them lettuce and nectarines since they like those daily as well.

Oh and shes attached to the nest box she's in there like most of the day coming out to stretch her wings hourly or so.

Hi Danieru, strange no one has answered you. :( being your first post.

Budgies lay between 3 to 10 eggs. average isabout 5 to 7. 1 is laid approximately every other day.

By now the first and second one could be candled to see if they are fertile. To do this shine a small but bright light behind the egg, you don't need to touch it. If it is fertile there will be a red or dark red glow through the egg. If it is not fertile it will have a yellow or yellowish glow. after 14 days old a fertile egg will have no glow at all. This is how I now candle the eggs.

If you clean your hands well in disinfectant you could lift the egg and shine the torch through the eggs and see the chick develop inside.

I can't tell you the odds of the eggs being fertile that is up to the hen and cock.

Hi Daniel and welcome to the forum :) All sounds like its working out with your breeding pair. Hens can have between 5 and 10 eggs but average 5-6 usually. We like photos here, so keep them coming.

Lettuce isn't really a good thing for budgies unless you get the darker leaf kind with less water (not iceberg)....you may want to try her on some sweetcorn (off the cob) and grated carrot and also any of the chinese vegies like pak choy, bok choy etc.

Look forward to reading your updates. :(

Cheers karen

I tried carrot and peeled carrot but they didn't even touch it, the lettuce is the dark green kind, they're fussy over what they eat these budgies.

Oh and thanks to all who replied with good info and welcoming me, I'm going to go and do that torch thing but i won't touch the eggs.

I did the light test one didn't change with a glow so the first had no glow, the second looked like it had a redish/brownish vein inside and the third looked a bit orange.

Well that sounds promissing. Let us know how it goes.

Welcome Daniel, it sounds like you have some fertile ones there, the last one laid will still have the clear look of an unfertile egg, around day 5 you start to see the veins you spoke of in the second egg. Even if you candle them all I would state to leave all the eggs in, when learning what to look for you can make mistakes and throw out an egg that was in fact good.

When the babies arrive you can retry them with the carrot and other veggies they have not touched before. Budgie seem to LOVE the fresh food when they have young ones around. One of my hen had never had any fresh food in her love but dug into when breeding and will still eat it now.

well i think the first should hatch around the 20th and the second around the 24-25th.

she doesn't lay every other or second day she lays like every 3-5 days.

By The Way now that the breeding pair is separated from the other 2 males chidori/yellow male seems to be getting less attention since shes always inside the breeding box now hopefully he'll do it more with her now, since bluee was jealous and caused fights when they were beak petting/kissing.

Hi and welcome to the forums. The males often get bored, while they wait outside the nestbox. It is good to give them toys to play with, (don't worry it doesn't distract them :D) and you can also let them out to fly as well, for a bit of exercise. Leave the door of the cage open, so that he can go back to his mate whenever he needs to. :D

well yes he is bored but likes to chat with his mates who live in the cage next door,OMG just checked nesting box theres another egg now, which now makes number 4!!!

Re reading your first post, it sounds a bit like she had a skip in her cycle. Did she lay any out of the box? or before you set them up? 10 days is roughly how long it takes for a hen to restart a cycle of egg laying after removal of all eggs. This would be an odd case with her having eggs in the box still but it can happen.

  • Author

Nope none out of the box and this is her first time laying eggs By The Way,well she didn't lay until 2 weeks after i set up the breeding box,so it's her first cycle/clutch.

edit* and now shes had a 5th egg

okay now it's 6 eggs

So follow budgie lovers just a quick update to let you all know that 3 eggs have hatched, the eldest is a week old the middle one is 5 days and the youngest is 3 days.

Both parents are nesting them which is good I have to change their food twice as much now but it's cool.

My new budgie tina has been here for about a 11 days she's already checking out her nesting box in her cage. she even runs in there when i open the cage to give them lettuce.
