Candleing ?

Featured Replies

I am now up to egg #6 and I am thinking of candleing them. I've never done this before, so those of you that have, please let me know the days i can do it. I seem to remember you can at day 5, is there a certain time period of when you can, if an egg is 10 days old, is it too late?

Thanks Lovey, so i guess i'm still okay to candle tonight!

How'd you make out buuzbee? I candled my eggs when I got home tonight - this is my first clutch ever. I think all 4 are fertile - and I swear I could see the feet of a chick in one. I'm assuming that will be the one to hatch first. My last egg is starting to show veins too so I'm very excited!!! I candled them a few days back and thought one was a dud but now it looks good. It is really interesting to candle. Handle with care and everything should be okay.

Hi Shawna, i just got home so after dinner i will have a go with it. hmmm, i wonder if i can get a picture of it! (Laughing out loud)

If you haven't marked them then you don't know which is the oldest. The first laid you might have trouble seeing anything more than an air-bubble, but I think it's great to see the little veins growing and if your lucky the pin head size heart beat.

Remember to wash your hands (use a paper towel to dry if you can) and handle them the smallest amount possible.

Good Morning! okay, first off, after going thru my box of breeding supplies last night, i found my candling light! yippie! I totaly forgot I bought it years ago. So I didn't have to touch them at all. A friend gave me a link to a site that has excellent videos of different eggs @ different stages, and then also of deffective ones. So that was a great help too! I saw something in every egg. The older ones, you were right, I could maily see the air pocket, but did see something else, like a shaddow. The newer egg, i saw veins. I tried to take some photos, they are kind of blurry, but still fun to look at! (Laughing out loud)

Thanks for you help everyone, this was a total first for me, and I will deffinatly do it again. I will try again tonight too, since I was nervous to do it and my hands were shakey! (Laughing out loud), i know, what a dork! hehehe

anyways, heres the link to the pics!

Thanks for sharing. Those were neat to see. Can you share the link your friend gave you. I'd be interested to see the videos.

yeah I was interested to hear that there is a video out there to look at.

Glad you found the candling light. :(

Some good pictures there where you can see the veins in the egg.

:) Okay, I know you guys don't understand me and I am an imbecile in the world of breeding but I don't understand the need to candle. Like why disturb the eggs, whatever will be will be especially if you are a home breeder with small clutches. Isn't the surprise nice to see as you cannot manipulate the fertility anyhow? Sorry, just trying to get into your mindsets and good luck to all of you with your potential bubs. :)

Simply becuase to some of us 18 days is too long to wait to find out :)

I had to candle mine to find out which ones were fertile, so I could foster them out. But I didn't candle the first clutch.

:) Now I get it, some folks are too impatient :P and others have to make alternative arrangments! :)
