February 14, 200718 yr Author Do they get splay legged if there is no shavings in the nest box? Because I have no shavings, mine are just like yours... Most of my nest boxes DO have shavings in them Joey. I recommend shavings or some kind of nesting materials. I just have to put it in at various stages depending on the hen. If you have a flat nestbox floor and no concave and no shavings, yes you can get splay leg in babies, especially if the hen sits too tight on the babies. Edited February 15, 200718 yr by Bubbles
February 15, 200718 yr Author More photo's Karen please.Glad they are all going well. As requested....
February 15, 200718 yr how cute the feathers on the side of the face look longer then pet budgies. He is super cute.
February 16, 200718 yr Author Every one of the Sampson and Delilah's babies went into spastic legs symptoms. I took the lot to the vets. BIG $$$$$'S They have diagnosed Metabolic Bone Disease or Rickets. Even thought the hen was getting calcivet and cod liver oil she may not have processed it properly in order to feed the chicks. But one adopted chick in the same box is unaffected. So the vet believes there may be a hereditary cause here....from the cock or hen we have yet to see. The chicks are on a calcium supplement ( an injection at the vets ) and now by beak and prognosis is uncertain. One of the chicks died during the injection. I have been advised to remove the hen and allow father to feed the chicks. To go further, would have got horrendously high in costs, so the vet says to try the supplements for some days and see. Apparently they can suffer a secondary bacterial infection as well and I have to watch them closely for signs of that.
February 17, 200718 yr Author Oh no. That's no good. I hope the calcium corrects things. They are hanging in there, Sailorwolf. Some better than others. on a very sad note I am so upset This baby fell from the nestbox entry hole today just 6 inches or so....seemed fine, but died an hour after it was put back in the nestbox. Was turning into the loveliest yellow and green cinnamon dominant pied Boy ....not a good day

February 18, 200718 yr Karen, shocking news. Sorry for the loss of your bubs. Does this mean you'll retire this female from breeding? Is it hereditary from her or the dad?
February 18, 200718 yr Author Karen, shocking news. Sorry for the loss of your bubs. Does this mean you'll retire this female from breeding? Is it hereditary from her or the dad? I have retired Delilah from breeding and will try Sampson again. Apart from extensive tests that may or may not provide answers, the only way to find out if the problem was hereditary is to breed each bird with a different partner.
