Posted January 23, 200718 yr I hope this is in the correct place.I came home and as usuall I went straight to the aviary to check on the babies. There I found Snowflakes two babies with their heads pecked, one with wing pecked and feathers every where. So I picked them up and turned to go out when I saw Fluro's baby on the ground. Took all three inside and carefully checked them out.Fluro's baby was unmarked but had an empty crop, wgich is very unusual for her.The bigger two babies both had feathers missing on their heads but no blood.Smaller one had blood on its left wing.I applied cornflour to the spot on wing and this has helped. Here is the problem,I couldn't leave the babies in the aviary obviously as they would eventually get killed, have no large spare cages to put mum with babies etc.Have babies in incubating tank together in nesting box and the bigger two aren't feeding.Smaller one took some rearing food off a spoon and crop filled up. I have to work tomorrow and thursday so can't get to vet till saturday. The rearing mix seems very runny when I make it to the instructiions,is this normal. It is the woombaro type.I also have some egg and biscuit mixture but this has no instructions on how to make it up.Any help from you experienced people would be great.I also have some poly-aid plus which is a supplement,do you think this would help the babies? P.S.will be purchasing breeding cages if I breed next year. thank you
January 23, 200718 yr Oh dear - you poor thing. It's a worry isn't it. Especially in going to work - the babies do need regular food and could be in big trouble without it...Re rearing mixes, I'd stick with the Wombaroo rearing mix. Re feeding the bubs, just add enough water to the point where it's just runny enough to go through a syringe. A late nice chemist will have syringes if you need one. Re mixing: - put a bit of the Wombaroo in a cup (eg. a few tablespoons) - add a very small amount of hot water from the kettle (eg. 40ml) - then mix it up with cold water until it's just smooth enough to get through a syringe The hot water gets rid of the lumps. Watch the temp though. I recall reading that 38-40 degrees is the right temperature but test to make sure this is right. If no syringe, try the uri geller spoon bending thing. Put an old spoon on the side of some wood (grab a old one) and bang it with a hammer into shape. If they're not feeding, can you possibly crop needle them some food? January 23, 200718 yr Keep trying with the food. How old the babies? I don't have any experience with hand rearing but the formula is runny for young ones and gets thicker with age (at least the packet I had just in case indicated that) You can try some warm milk if need be to try and get some substance into them as well. I know Daz has given a drop or two to his young babies that had yet to be feed to help them. He might have watered it down but I can't recall. Would your work let you take them with you?? then you can feed them during the day.
January 23, 200718 yr Although bear in mind that budgie digestive systems are not supposed to be able to handle lactose (which is in milk). So not sure whether this may be even a greater effect in babies... Although I have heard some breeders give milk (but in small amounts of course due to their lactose issue). Good advice about the mixture thickness Nerwen. Yes - how old are they. Also just thought whether they may take to millet sprays? Presume they are now a bit older and nearish to weaning, given all the comments about blood on their feathers? Good idea re taking them to work. Why not! Keep trying with the food. January 23, 200718 yr Author Good news just tried the babies again and the smallest one can't get it fast enough.the other two took small amounts but they still have some food in their crops.Yes I can take them to work which is good.I work at a child care centre and they are use to me bringing in animals. They all are doing well and are next to my bed for the night time feeds. Have been using a thermometer to make sure water is not to hot. Thanks for all the help guys.
January 23, 200718 yr Author fed babies at 2:30am,still have the mothers ears for babies crying.(Laughing out loud) Then again this morning.Little pink baby is taking food well and I tricked the other two by bringing my daughters budgie out and they took some food off a spoon thinking it was him.It is pretty hot here during the day so I won't need a heater for them at work.Going to be a busy day.
January 23, 200718 yr That's a brilliant idea (the trick!). The kids at kindy will no doubt love seeing the babies today (and tomorrow and next week). Mummy is very alert hearing them cry. Well done FGM. fed babies at 2:30am,still have the mothers ears for babies crying.(Laughing out loud)Then again this morning.Little pink baby is taking food well and I tricked the other two by bringing my daughters budgie out and they took some food off a spoon thinking it was him.It is pretty hot here during the day so I won't need a heater for them at work.Going to be a busy day.
January 24, 200718 yr That is awesome news to hear. good on you and the best of luck with the little ones. Though I don't think you need any luck. You sound good.
January 24, 200718 yr Author Thanks for the support guys.Today the middle size baby ate properly for the first time off a spoon and it helped the children at work eat their lunch as they saw it eating,The biggest one still wont accept much food and has also been trying to feed the smaller babies,it is so cute to see but I am worried about this one(sonrisa). Will try and post some pics tomorrow.Have found if I leave them in the nesting box and put spoon through hole that they feed much better.Another trick I learnt today. The kids made me promise to bring the babies back tomorrow.(Laughing out loud)
January 24, 200718 yr Author Good news sonrisa has eaten off the spoon by herself for the first time ever at 11:30pm and then again at 4:30am.I think she has the hang of it now.Going to post video and pics on picture forum.Going to put a millet spray in box today for sonrisa too.
