Aaahh! Loosing Feathers!

Hello!

I have always wanted a budgie and now that i have my own house/time/budget was ready for my first budgie (yay!)

I got Billy (actually not sure yet if girl or boy), i think when i got him he was 3 weeks old. got from a breeder with outside aivery. He was living on the floor, they said he got kicked out of the breeding box by another female. his siblings died from being pecked on the head (poor little babies) but his dad was flying down to ground to feed him as he couldn't fly yet so he survived. Because of this they gave him to me to look after. When i got him he looked pretty good, considering. had been on the floor for 1 day and 1 night. I brought him home and he seemed to be settling in really well but after a week his tail and long wing feathers all fell out! It has taken about 3 days for them to fall out. I am very worried :) He was just starting to fly but now crash lands so have stopped holding him up high in case he tries to fly off my hand and falls to the ground. Is this normal? will they grow back? He is still eating, drinking, chirping, playing, climbing as per normal and no other feathers have come out. I didn't see him pull them out.

please help, really want Billy to have a full and flying life he deserves!

thanks

I had a baby budgie that was attacked in the same way and its flight feathers dropped out too. I think it was a stress thing. They grew back through moulting :)

There are however feather conditions that the feathers dont grow back or at least grow back and keep falling out again. Pulpitis is where they keep growing but keep breaking off or dropping out, and of course there is french moult which shows feather loss from the nest.

If worried, seek an avian vet for a proper diagnosis, or you will just have to wait and see what the moult brings....new feathers that stay or new ones that drop out again.

Welcome to our forum....Cheers karen :)

Hello, sorry to hear this about your budgie. I don't think I can give you an advice on this. Try to post a photo of your budgie (how the feathers look like now), I'm sure someone here will help :)

Hope your budgie will be okay and flying again :)

Feathers.

Dehydration is also another cause for feathers dropping out. Make sure you budgie gets plenty of water.
