Posted January 9, 200718 yr Please help me! about 3 months ago I got a baby budgie from a local breeder. He was fine, always really cuddly and smoochy, now if my OH or I put our hands in his cage he will give us a nip. I just sort of said, okay, thats his space and thats fine, we just leave the door open and he comes out anyway. Once he is out, hes quite happy to land on us, but if we put our hans up to him, he will bite. Its only really been the last week and a bit that he started doing this. He was out of the cage and we had to go out for a bit, so we just left him out. When we came home, he was stuck in between the glass sliding door and the wire door. I took him out and cuddled him for a bit and all was fine. The next day was when he started the biting, at first I just thought maybe hes just had a bit of a scare, but it just keeps happening. He is very kissy with the knobs on the backs of our dining chairs and the balls in his cage, but it's like he's mad at us for letting him get stuck ing the first place. Does anyone have any ideas, and will my boy ever love me again?
January 9, 200718 yr Im afraid you have a hormonal budgie! Happens to all bird species the smaller the bird the younger the age. Dont worry give him his own space - its doesnt last long and he will return to be your loving little boy!
January 9, 200718 yr Thank you so much for your help Boomberry. So is this like a dog on heat type of thing that will happen every now and then, or is it more just like a hormonal teenager, and once he grows out of it, that will be the end of it?
January 11, 200718 yr Hi Briohny I was having the same problem with my Chico, he is coming onto 5 months old now but about 4 - 6 weeks ago he was UNBAREABLE !! and I know what you mean when u say it hurts !! he loves biting our lips and nose but he has calmed down a bit thank goodness, like Boomberry said he is hormonal and u will find he may lose some more feathers than usual too ... its kinda like the terrible two and teething stages in kids I spose ... I learned all of this through the very helpful and way more experienced than me on this site ... most everyone has an answer to everything here re budgies ... its great Edited January 11, 200718 yr by MissHarley

January 17, 200718 yr Thanks for your help everyone! He seems to be getting worse the last few days, attacking his bell in his cage and if we go anywhere near the cage he lashes out at us. He has had to stay in his cage for the last week or so, we have been baby sitting my OH's mum's dogs, one of which is a known budgie killer. I have let him out a few times, when I can shoo said budgie killer outside, but I just cant catch him anymore to get him back in his cage. I let him out last night and held a bowl of water up for him and he had a great time splashing about in there, but then attacked me like never before. I hope he does improve shortly, I'm getting very worried that things are never going to improve. He is losing quite a few feathers, they are everywhere!
January 17, 200718 yr Maybe moulting is making him crazy as well as the hormonal thing, don't flinch when he bites (I know it hurts), he will remember that and use it to his advantage, good luck to you.
