Here Is Something Maybe You’ve Never Seen Before!

Hello everyone,

It has been awhile since I’ve last posted here, but it’s never too late to come back!

I have something to share with you, something that has been puzzling me…

These are all pics of the same budgie, his name is Apollo and he was born June 2006.

okay, so if you look at these two first pics you would go: “So what! Everyone has seen a pied before!”

But if you look closer (I made it easier by blowing up the pics) you will notice that his left eye is different from the right eye… yep! One has an iris ring and the other doesn’t!!

What about that?! Has anyone seen this before? Want to share some thoughts?

Thanks,

Luso

haha neat, never seen this before but yep, I've heard of recessives having one iris and one not. Interesting.

recessives pieds never develop iris in their eyes they are always black also the males don't have blue ceres they have pink ones .

l have two budgies Butter who is a double factor dominant pied , Papaya who is a yellow double factor spangle , they both have eyes that are the same as yours , one of their eye has no iris ring but their other eye has an iris ring .

l have heard before that this does happen , l forgot why it does thou .

A few double factor dominant pieds have this. Cheeta has one and I do too. One eye with iris ring and one without.

I had one as well...he died though looked just like that!

Recessive pieds will not get an iris ring at all. I have heard of birds getting one eye with a ring and one without, and they have all been doublefactor dominant pieds instead. Luso, your bird is probably that instead.

Yeah my double factor dom pied has only one iris ring. :D it's really cool... :)

Edit...Actually I must add... after looking at my Spirit very closely in the sunlight, his eye is not actually completely dark... in comparison to a recessive pied where the eyes are completely dark, Spirit's 'dark' eye if you look real close in the sunlight, you'll see a very very very faint outline of the iris ring, but it's not very visible out of bright light at all. So it looks like theres no iris rings.

I love the eyes on white birds with an iris ring.. they are so pretty.. it is one of the things that made me fall in love with Oh-oh.

Well… don’t I look stupid… thinking I had a great rarity!! Looking at your posts it seems everyone has one of these at home!!

By the way, did some research and found that these guys are called “Odd Eyed Pied”. They are said to result mostly from the crossing of recessive to dominant pied.

My budgies parents (also mine):

More, this oddity isn’t seen as something positive by experts… but I still like mine very much, yes Sir I do!!

Thanks everyone.

All budgies have iris rings. However in babies and recessive pieds (and other mutations) the iris is a very dark brown. You can always see thei pupil if you look close enough.

I don't, I think it is fascinating.. I also don't believe there is such a thing as a stupid post on here so "nyah" :P:

Wow, there you go, learn something new everyday. It is obviously fairly common.

I love your forum signature too, by the way, it is a great image.
