hi there , after reading flopping fish corn = sick budgie . i was wondering what other vegies or other foods do you feed your budgies, obviously fresh is best.. as some of you know i just this week was given 4 little budgies who i think have lived just on seed alone for their lives ( 18 months).. its been a long time since i have had budgies,, just recently i have had rainbow lori indian ringneck and now a cockatiel and budgies

at the moment i am feeding them their seed , some millet and some greens (lettuce) i know when i was a kid and had budgies we used to pick seeded grass and thistle for the budgies, not sure if this is right for them so i havent as yet. obviously you would have to be carefull where it is picked from ....also i used to sprout some seeds for my ringneck which he loved.. is this something that budgie people do to?

so i thought it might be a helpfull guide to have a list of foods,, veg fruit grasses? ect on what people feed their budgies, sorry if this topic has been done before , im new and cant seem to find anything

looking forward to yur responses..

Hey Rexy,

Lettuce is okay as long as it is not the iceberg type. Dark green curly leafed is the best. I use romaine, beet greens, spinach, collard greens... I go to the produce section of the grocery store and pick out some of several kinds of greens. They seem to like them all. I have given them grasses from the yard too and yes we do sprout seeds for them and I also buy sprouts at the store too. Herbs too seem to be well loved. Carrots, apples, hard boiled egg, pea pods, parsley, brown rice, beans. Mine especially love brocoli. Others might like it fresh best, but mine seem to like it best if I buy it frozen and then run it under hot water till it is thawed and a little warm.

I am sure that other folks will come along and give you more ideas too. Just remember that it might take a little time for them to get used to the idea. I sprinkle seed on any new thing I give them. It seems to let them know it is food.

Good luck and good eating!! I know I eat more veggies since I got budgies!!

Shell

heya shell, thanks so much for that... shopping tomorrow so ill pick up some more tasty foods for them.. probably best to introduce 1 at a time i guess..

keep the replys coming guys.... :book:

Broccoli is a real favourite too. I give mine dandelion leaves (not the hairy ones) and they devour them completely in 2 minutes! I give them banana too. Although banana is quite high in sugar so I don't do it often. And I also give them an egg and biscuit mix that I bought from the pet store. Apple and grapes are favourites as well.

Note always wash your fruit and veg before giving it to them and chilian grapes are very bad for birds, there was a recent case where an owner and his birds were all poisoned by chilian grapes and he lost 9 of his birds).

There is a list of acceptable and nonacceptable foods in this forum. You can search for it.

Your getting some great answer and the link to the safe food is good. But as to Thistle I give a little bit to my bird every now and then THey love it and haven't had an issue with it. It's in my own back yard so I know that nothing has been sprayed on or around it.

great thanks guys... i think ill pick some thistle and seeded grass for them, and start on some vegies . 1 at a time..

thanks also for the link,

Some people give their birds sweet peppers, but mine don't seem to like them. Another thing people will sometimes do is mix some baby food in with their seed. My guys like peas, both in the pod and shelled, as well as just about everything others have mentioned already. Some people say that veggies are more nutritious than fruits, so they (fruit) should be given sparingly. I give mine a thin slice of apple roughly once a week for instance, but they get different veggies pretty much daily. It was mentioned that corn is high in sugar and phosphorus, so it shouldn't be given daily either, but there are TONS of budgies that love it, mine included. There is a food and nutrition forum on here that has a lot of ideas - recipies for fun birdie bread and egg foods and directions for sprouting seeds as well as other good info.
