Posted January 2, 200718 yr Hi my budgie batfink is not well (see thread called Help my budgie is wet if you want the whole story!!) I read on a budgie health website and also a nurse at the vets today advised that cold tea for the budgie to drink can be beneficial. I would value your opinions and experience on this before I give it her as I always thought caffiene was a no-no for budgies. Thanks Laura
January 2, 200718 yr Caffeine is a no-no for budgies so i wouldn't try it - i've deffinitely not heard of it before.
January 2, 200718 yr I would be cautious there are teas with no caffeine. Here is a good article about herbal remedies and you may find some information http://www.birdsnways.com/wisdom/ww24eii.htm
January 3, 200718 yr Were you told what the tea was supposed to do? A little caffeine here or there won't kill a bird, but I would only do it if I felt it was worth it. If this is going to mask symptoms (sometimes called relieving symptoms) I wouldn't do it. Have you gotten a diagnosis for the bird yet? Until you get a diagnosis, I wouldn't treat the symptoms. You don't want to cover up the signs of illness because they need to be monitored closely. I really hope your budgie gets better soon.
January 3, 200718 yr I have read some posts about tea and they say give weak black tea to aide in digestion Terri but I am not going to advise it because it wasn't from an avian vet or a trusted source.
January 3, 200718 yr Thanks guys - I agree with you and havent given it. The nurse said she has heard it could 'perk them up' - which I thought would just be the caffiene and mask her real symptoms as you say. The article said it could soothe the digestive system but anyone can post an article on the internet so as you rightly say - its not a trusted source and I shall follow my vets treatment only. Thanks x
January 3, 200718 yr Caffiene free teabags are totally fine my birds drink it all the time. Camomile is a favourite too.
January 6, 200718 yr Caffiene free teabags are totally fine my birds drink it all the time. Camomile is a favourite too. I was told by a budgie breeder that to stop loose droppings in budgies, to administer cold black tea as this helps them. If I were to give it to mine I'd use caffeine free tea which I drink anyway. Don't know if this helps but just to say I have had this advice given to me which I would use if I needed to. I wouldn't recommend it unless the droppings were loose but as a "medication" for quick fix I should think it would be okay though always best to ascertain why the droppings were loose in the first place.
