Baby Has Cold?

Featured Replies

I took my little 2 week old baby budgie out to handle today and it was sneezing. It was very warm and otherwise active, so I put it back under its mummy so that it stays warm. I don't think I'll take it out of the nest box just for a couple of days so that it stays warm. Any ideas? The other two babies are fine and are becoming quite friendly.

Did it sneeze a lot or just one or two times? It might have been something in the air like dust and it just got a bit of irritation. I wouldn't worry too much unless you see it do this often or see signs of other problems. :(

Ah, okay. Poor thing. :D I would talk to an avian vet about it, and see what he/she can suggest. Antibiotics might be required, it sounds like some sort of respiratory infection.

plus if the baby has it the parents could be contract it too

keep us updated and good luck you may want to PM Karen I think she had a few babies on antiobotics or she may just see this post too.

I have never had a baby with sneezing. But I would firstly check to see if its nostrils are blocked and or check the bedding materials. Is the nesting material too fine and dusty ? Respiratory problems seem to be a symptom that shows up stemming from other things. Is the nest really mucky....i.e. "wet nest" . By wet nest it means does this nest get really poopy ? If so it is a sign of ill health in the nest of both parents and babies. Respiratory problem can go "pear-shaped" really quickly in young birds. so if at all worried later in the day, I would seek veterinary help. In the meantime, check the nest for dust and possibly feather mites etc.

Baby's nose is clear. I'm using wood shavings and it isn't too dusty. Perhaps I should clean out the nest box.

Only problem with colds is that they are viruses. Antibiotics don't work. :D

I took baby out later last night and this morning to check up on it and its runny nose has gone and it seems fine so far. Thank you everyone for helping.

No. She was very grumpy. Before I changed the bedding she was ever so accomodating, she would even try to pull my hand underneath her body to keep it warm. Now she is very angry with it and it gets a bite. :)

Budgies don't really get "colds" so much as respiratory infections, so antibiotics could help if that is the case. You never know, it's nearly impossible to diagnose something on your own. Hope the baby feels better soon.
